International college students wield a huge economic impact, contributing more than $38 billion to the U.S. economy (even in this year of COVID-19) and supporting nearly half a million jobs. The pandemic piled on to the already-grim conditions for international enrollment in the U.S., dragged down by the growing perception of the U.S. as a land rife with racism and tough visa laws. Now, with the promise of a less xenophobic administration in Washington and domestic enrollment pressures building, higher education and its promoters see a chance for the U.S. to regain its niche as a chief destination for the world's learners.

President-elect Joe Biden nominated Boston Mayor Marty Walsh as the next U.S. secretary of labor and Rhode Island Gov. Gina M. Raimondo as the next U.S. secretary of commerce. Walsh will be succeeded on an interim basis by Boston City Council President Kim Janey, who becomes the first Black and first woman mayor of New England's largest city. Raimondo, who chaired NEBHE's Commission of Higher Education & Employability, will be succeeded in Rhode Island by Lieutenant Gov. Daniel J. McKee, who was honored with a NEBHE Excellence Award in 2010 while mayor of Cumberland, R.I.
