Day 16: Where in the World is Finlayson?

Destination:

Finlayson, Minnesota is a small town 90 minutes north of Minneapolis and an hour southwest from Duluth. And it is really small - population 300. It's known for lakes and woods and as a get-away for vacationers to numerous summertime cabins and resorts surrounding the town.

Fun Facts:

St. Urho's Day is the Finnish tradition of celebrating when St. Urho chased the crickets, and other vermin, out of Finland. Finlayson embraces its Finnish background by celebrating St. Urho's feast day on March 27. The community center hosts a free pancake breakfast while the fire department serves delicious fried bread.

Art Form:

D'ears is truly a family-owned and run business. Initially the creative vision of Ken Matheson,

the company was started in November 2013. In partnering with his wife Pam, son Jaron, daughter-in-law Leah, and her parents Dean and Donna Carroll, they've each contributed individual talents to grow d'ears into a jewelry company with distinctive hand-made products in stores across the country.

d'ears Intro

D'ears jewelry is made from coated blanks of thin steel or brass. The wired earrings and pendants are embellished by hand with hypoallergenic silver-plated copper wire. They use a special ink that is embedded into the finish.

The artwork and images used are either works made by the family (including the grandsons!), collaborating artists and photographers, or public domain works (for example, Van Gogh's Starry Night).

Some of the earrings, in fact, are labeled with the 3 boys' names and ages when they created the paintings. Sections of their art were transferred as graphics onto the earrings.

Due to the handcrafted process, there may be some variation in the image colors and in the wire embellishments, but their unique manufacturing process makes their jewelry known for artistic expression, quality and durability.

A heart-felt thank you to all who participated yesterday in our #givingtuesdaynow fundraiser for Rose Brooks Center. Today we are packing lots and lots of our cloth shopping bags, and friends at Rose Brooks have already told us they've seen donations come through with "Flipping Favorites" in the comment line. There are more bags available and donations will continue going to Rose Brooks.

We are continuing to plan how we at World's Window will re-open our store in Brookside and welcome you in. Right now our target date is Friday, May 15th with limited hours, but will certainly keep you informed. Our goal, of course, is to re-open World's Window in a welcoming but safe way for all.
