July 24, 2022

In this special edition, we provide information about the upcoming 2022 Primary in St. Johns County, including why you should vote the Democratic ballot, our recommendations for candidates on your ballot, how to check the status and return your mail ballot, and options for Early Voting and Election Day. And don't forget to join us at our Meet the Candidates event on July 30th! Details below.

WHY VOTE THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY BALLOT?

Reason #1:  Voting the Democratic ballot in the August Primary allows you to choose the best DEM candidate to beat Republican governor Ron DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody, and Senator Marco Rubio. Multiple Democrats are running in these races. If you believe these Republicans have let Florida down, please help us determine which candidate should run against them by voting for your choice on the Democratic Primary ballot. These Democratic challengers will not appear on the ballot for non-party affiliated voters nor the Republican ballot because Florida is a closed Primary state.

Reason #2:  Depending on which district you live in, you can help us win three important local elections in the Primary:  two School Board seats and one mayorship. In each of these races, our endorsed candidate can win outright in the Primary--without going on to the November general election--if they receive 50% of the vote plus one. In these races, only one Democrat or NPA is facing a Republican, so the choice is clear. We endorse and urge you to vote for Lauren Abell School Board District 1, Nancy Tray School Board District 3, and Nancy Sikes-Kline for City of St. Augustine mayor.

Keep in mind, many other races in which Democrats are running will appear on your November General Election ballot, including State Representative District 19, City Commission seats, Mosquito Control Board, Airport Authority -- and of course the winners of the DEM and REP Primaries for U.S. Senator and Representative, Governor, Attorney General, State Senator, State Representatives, County Commissioners (plus School Board and mayor if no candidate wins with 50% plus 1). Up to 26 races will be decided in the November General Election!

Florida's status as a Closed Primary State has implications for who is on your ballot: You may wonder why Rep. John Rutherford and his Republican challengers appear on the Democratic primary ballot for U.S. District 5. This is because under Florida’s closed Primary rules, the race has been deemed “universal” and will appear on all voters’ ballots (even though all candidates are registered Republicans). The same is true for State Representative District 20. Other races (for County Commissioner, U.S. Representative District 6 and State Representative District 18) are closed for the Primary because only Republicans are running, and thus do not appear on the Primary Democratic ballot. Expect to see these races on the November general election ballot.

DID YOU GET YOUR PRIMARY MAIL BALLOT?

The first wave of mail ballots have been sent out to voters for the 2022 Primary. More will be sent over the coming weeks. You can see when yours was mailed by going to VoteSJC.com and selecting "Voters," then "Am I Registered." After submitting the information requested, you will be able to scroll down and see when you have (1) requested a mail ballot, (2) were sent a mail ballot, (3) when your mail ballot was received by the Supervisor of Elections office, and (4) when your mail ballot is counted -- as shown below. Alternatively, you can call the elections office at 904-823-2238 to ask about your ballot status anytime.
