Two weeks ago, your Y announced the completion of a challenge grant by the John E. and Robin Jaqua Fund of Oregon Community Foundation that inspired 145 donors to raise a total of $4 million for the new Y!

John Jaqua served on the YMCA board of directors during the 1950s and 60s, provided support and leadership during the fundraising campaign to build the current Y in 1955 at 2055 Patterson Street, and guided the organization as Board President from 1958 to 1960.

"My parents believed in the importance of having a thriving YMCA in our community to serve families and people of all ages," said Jon Jaqua, son of John and Robin Jaqua. "I'm grateful that their legacy continues to help the YMCA meet the changing needs of our community, which has grown so much since their work in the 1950s. I'm inspired by the commitment of so many other donors to support the vision of building a new Y and I look forward to the State reauthorizing the lottery bond funding. The new Y groundbreaking will mark an important moment in Eugene's history just as the 2055 Patterson location did in 1955."

The John E. and Robin Jaqua Fund of Oregon Community Foundation challenged the Y to raise $3 million to be matched by the fund's $1 million.

Read more about the many donors who contributed to the match, including:
  • Norman and Olga Evelyn Wildish Fund of Oregon Community Foundation
  • Johan and Emel Mehlum
  • Dolly and Don Woolley
  • Larry Hirons
Thank you for celebrating this momentous occasion with your Y!

Masks remain an important component of COVID safety

In order to continue to protect the most vulnerable in our population, your Y will continue to require masks both inside our facility and in our outside group exercise classes--- regardless of vaccination status.

Thank you for all that you do to protect our entire community and respect our public health guidelines. We appreciate your compassion for every member of our community, including those with underlying health conditions or those unable to participate in vaccination efforts.

Note: If you would like to voluntarily participate in your Y's social media effort to share public health information about the COVID-19 vaccine, we invite you to share your photo receiving your vaccine. Email your photo to [email protected] and receive a photo release form.

Thank you!
Your Y's Staff Selected For Undoing Racism Training

Y staff Lisa Milton and Danielle Ragan have been selected to participate in an Undoing Racism Cohort with the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond.

The intensive training starts this week and ends June 4. It is part of an effort by the Y-USA Diversity, Inclusion, Global and Multicultural Development Team to provide professional development around issues of race, equity, diversity and inclusion for Y leaders around the country.

"I look forward to bringing back the knowledge gained to our Y community as we further our DIG efforts and start untethering institutional oppression in our own backyard," says Danielle Ragan, a Multi-Site Coordinator and co-chair of your Y's Diversity, Inclusion and Global Engagement Committee. "It takes understanding and awareness of institutional racism in order to move forward to "undo" it. I am appreciative of the opportunity to further my own understanding so that I can help our Y share that understanding that will lead to transformative action in our community."

Danielle and Lisa are one of 100 individuals from YMCAs across the country selected to participate in these cohorts. Their inclusion and training reflects the Eugene Y's commitment toward becoming an anti-racist, multi-cultural organization.

"We have partnered with national funders to provide training to local Ys that we hope will do two things: Provide a common analysis about race in our country and the effects it has on everyone; and provide insight to the value of the workshop and work with local Ys to provide spaces for their leaders to have the conversation as a whole," says Victor Rivera of Y-USA.

We look forward to sharing what Lisa and Danielle learn with our Y Family!

Families, Hop On Your Bike In Celebration of Bike Month

Your Y is thrilled to promote May is Bike Month through its partnership with the Active Transportation Committee, which advises the City of Eugene's Transportation Planning Team on issues related to walking, biking, rolling and busing.

We all know that biking is a great way to get around town, enjoy the benefits of exercise and reduce air pollution from vehicles, and this month is the perfect time to explore new routes and make new biking friends.

Families are invited to a city-sponsored bike ride from Shasta Middle School to Golden Gardens Park, where kids can enjoy a treasure hunt before returning to the middle school. The Saturday, May 8, event is from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and one of many bike opportunities throughout May.

Check out the calendar of events in May HERE.
May Honors Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders

Since 1992, the month of May has been celebrated as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. May was chosen to commemorate both the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. on May 7, 1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad, which was built predominantly built by Chinese immigrants, on May 10, 1869.

Join us this May as the Eugene Y celebrates, highlights and honors the many accomplishments of Asian American and Pacific Islanders. It is particularly important because the AAPI community has faced increased hate crimes since the pandemic--- actions that are resoundingly denounced by YMCAs across the country.

Heard Around Town

Several media outlets reported our exciting news about the challenge grant from the John E. and Robin Jaqua Fund of Oregon Community Foundation:

Listen HERE for the KLCC story or read The Register-Guard story or listen to the interview on KPNW with your Y's Chief Development Officer Danielle Uhlhorn.

"It's pretty incredible when you go through our archives of 100+ years and you see the families who have been involved with the Y committed to ensuring that there's a robust Y in this community to serve families. It's just remarkable...We're really honored to have them continuing to support the Y," said Danielle.

Your Y was honored that Holly Kriz Anderson, our Youth Development Director, was a member of a panel on Women in the Workforce during the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce's Economic Summit April 21.

"We went from providing three hours of afterschool care in 17 schools to providing all-day care in single digit programs," said Holly explaining how the pandemic affected the Youth Development team. "So we went from focusing on healthy snacks, physical activity, homework time and playing to becoming custodial staff, I.T. specialists, Google and Zoom schedulers and we provided a lot of emotional support for families and for youth. We also became enforcers for masks and physical distancing."
