Meet Our New Greenway Gardens Crew
As the Summer program came to a close at the beginning of August, we began the search for a strong new team to be the

Ten local candidates

apprentices and staff)
are undergoing a month-long paid training program
. The training includ
es plant
identification with an
emphasis on fruit trees and native and invasive species, proper tool use and care, invasive species management, fine tuning the irrigation system, studying edible forest theory, leading community engagement events and

This August Urban Tilth played an integral role in Movement G
ener
ation's annual "Permaculture for the People" (P4P) training. Three of our staff members were partici
pants in the 2-week intensive workshop on Permaculture Design and Ecological Justice and two of Urban Tilth's

garden sites were
selected to host different projects designed and
implemented by the members
of the
workshop.
Each year Movement Generation (MG), an ally organization of Urban Tilth, hosts this training
for activists and artists doing land-based ecological justice work. The workshop provides an opportunity for
leaders in the eco-justice field to get hands on experience creating and
implementing regenerative designs in their communities and to get their Permaculture Design Certificates, while strengthening and deepening the ecological justice movement across sectors in key racial, social, economic & environmental organizations in the
SF Bay
Area.
Workshop participants spent one week out in the beautiful countryside at the
Occidental Arts & Ecology Center (OAEC) learning first hand
about the theories and practices of Permaculture
farming/designing from experts through a social/eco justice perspective.

During their second week of the training, the participants headed back down to the East Bay to create restorative design plans and sector maps for a handful of gardens and farms of key, local eco-justice organizations, such as
Urban Tilth, PODER,
Full Harvest Farm, and Acta Non-Verba Youth Farm
. Last week the participants began some design implementation, which will continue with the help of the participants and community over the next 6-months until completion.
Some design elements/projects the team of local leaders has already collaborated on and completed are a
installing a rainwater catchment system at Richmond High School, b
uilding a Cobb oven at Full Harvest Farm,
and installing
a 4-section Compost Bin at Qilombo.
Urban Tilth's Verde Elementary School Garden was among the sites to be chosen as a host site for the workshop participants to help implement a
restorative design. The team has chosen their education/learning area of the garden to be transformed using elements of permaculture
(such as utilizing natural patterns and resources & adding multi-functioning, low-energy use elements), which
they learned about in depth in the P4P training.
Please stay tuned for more information on the community work days that will be necessary to complete these infrastructure changes at the Verde garden.
