Dear Iowa State Students,

Yesterday, Governor Reynolds announced new actions impacting Ames and Story County to mitigate the spread of infection of COVID-19. Recognizing the increase in the number of cases among the 19-24 age group, Governor Reynolds ordered bars in six Iowa counties, including Story County and Ames, to close through Sept. 20. Restaurants must stop serving alcohol daily at 10 p.m. Also, the City of Ames is now considering a mandate for face coverings in all public spaces where physical distancing cannot be maintained.

We believe the actions of the Governor and the Ames City Council connect directly to the goals of the new policy we enacted last Friday to discourage large social gatherings of students. Last weekend, we saw some positive response to the new policy, but we must do much better. Intentional and blatant disregard for health and safety rules must stop.

We are in this for the long haul. We need your help to prioritize health and safety and progress further into the fall semester.

Complying with health and safety rules. Continue to practice the Cyclones Care behaviors that are vital to flatten the curve of infection of COVID-19.

Responsible social gatherings. We understand students’ desire to socialize and the importance of social interaction for overall well-being. That’s why it is critically important that you practice responsible behaviors during social activities – wear a face covering, do not gather in locations or in numbers that prevent you from physically distancing, and don’t share food or beverages

Thank you for committing to these actions and behaviors. We are continually monitoring our situation and considering whether other options or approaches will help us reduce the risk to our health and safety while working towards a successful completion to the fall semester.
