UPCOMING SUNDAY SERVICES
REV. FLORENCE CAPLOW
Sunday, September 6 at 10:15 a.m. via Live-stream

On this Labor Day Sunday, let’s take a moment to celebrate the people of the US Postal Service, unsung heroes of our civil society. Most of us take our daily mail for granted. In this service we will explore the history and contributions of this deeply American – and possibly imperiled – institution.

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
From Rev. Florence Caplow

In the midst of so much change in the world, we are also experiencing great change within of our staff team at UUCUC. I want to acknowledge that the transition of even one staff member in a close-knit church community like ours is difficult, and saying goodbye to two beloved staff members within a month of each other will be challenging for all of us. On August 3rd, she took over the empty Ward 2 seat on the Urbana City Council. The seat was vacated by Eric Jakobsson, who retired in June at age 81. Laut was one of two candidates for the position and was appointed by Urbana Mayor Diane Marlin before being confirmed by the council. The council voted 5-0, with Ward 5 alderman Dennis Roberts abstaining. She will serve the rest of Jakobssen’s terms, which will expire in May of next year. Read more

UUCUC'S "BUDDY SYSTEM"
Staying connected while
UUCUC facilities are closed

During this time of social distancing, staying in touch and checking in with each other is going to be very important. We hope you will consider being part of our "Buddy System" so we can care for one another.

You can sign up here: https://uucuc.breezechms.com/form/2184f1. Buddies will check in with each other regularly by phone to provide connection, companionship, and connections to help if needed. This is a great way to help each other.
JOYS AND SORROWS sent to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org for last Sunday, August 23.

From Gail Cohen: So happy she has gotten through her surgery with flying colors and that her recovery is moving at the speed of light!

From Karen Folk: My daughter Anna who has been seriously ill since May with bipolar anxiety/depression is improving greatly after Electroconvulsive Therapy treatments. Mike and I hope to return from caring for her in Austin within a month.

From Andrew Kerins: For the last eight years I have had the privilege to serve on the board of commissioners for the Champaign County Forest Preserve District. During that time, and for many years before, the agency has struggled with a growing maintenance backlog due to aging infrastructure. Places like Lake of the Woods, Homer Lake, Middlefork, and our other sites are well-used (visitation was up over 50% in spring 2020), but in need of significant repairs. I'm thrilled to report that on August 6th our board voted to go to referendum on November 4th to ask the voters of Champaign County for a very modest tax increase. I appreciate all of the people who have shared their positive thoughts and experiences related to the forest preserves. These sentiments give me great hope for a successful referendum.

Please send your joys and sorrows to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org in advance of the service each week, by 5:00 p.m. on Fridays.
GIVING AND GRATITUDE
UUCUC Social Action Offering. Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive offerings from our congregation. You may donate to the social action offering for the month in one of the following ways:

During the month of August, we will support the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. The Illinois chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a non-partisan movement to advocate for stronger gun laws. 36,000+ people per year die from gun deaths through mass shootings, suicide, domestic abuse, and accidental shootings. Solutions to gun violence are straightforward: stronger background checks, holding the gun industry accountable, removing guns from domestic abusers and suicidal people, and stopping gun trafficking and the sale of military grade weapons.
