LRES Literacy Celebration 2021
February 26 – March 12
“Reading Takes You Places”

“That’s the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet.”-Jhumpa Lahiri

Bookmark Contest (Due: March 2nd)
As part of our Literacy Celebration, we are holding a school-wide bookmark contest. All students are encouraged to create an original bookmark design. The design should incorporate the theme, “Reading Takes You Places.” Grade level winners will be announced and featured in the yearbook.

Read-a-Thon (February 26th-March 12th)
Get ready to READ, READ, READ! Our annual Read-a-Thon begins Friday, February 26. The Reading Log link will be posted in your classroom Canvas. Reading logs are due Friday, March 5th and March 12th. The top two students per class and the first place class in each grade with the highest average number of reading minutes will be rewarded!

Favorite Book Character Day (March 5th)
To celebrate our love of literature and travel, students may dress as a favorite book character or for the location of their favorite novel. Please have the students bring up to 3 of their favorite books from home to read at school. Please do not purchase costumes for this event. Be creative and use what you have at home.

Big Buddy Reading Program (March 8th)
The Big Buddy program will engage our 4th/5th grade students to inspire and entertain our primary students. Through a parent request letter, (letter sent home from teacher) the 4th/5th graders create short videos (under parent supervision). Student videos will include a short introduction followed by reading a beloved story. Videos due by March 3rd, please see parent letter for details. Our big buddies have always been a huge hit on campus – and we believe will help inspire our younger readers to read more! Check out the links in your Literacy Celebration Canvas module.

Author’s Day (March 10th)
On Wednesday, March 10th, the students will be viewing an interactive video from author Kathryn Cloward. Kathryn Cloward has written numerous books for young readers that support social learning and emotional intelligence self-development by helping youth understand and express their feelings. All students will have the opportunity to view one of her assemblies. To find out more information about her, please visit kathrynthegrape.com.
