Monthly News from Washington Park United Methodist Church
From Your Pastor
Greetings!
We are so excited to have just started Hybrid Worship – which continues our livestream worship experiences as well as allows limited numbers of in-person worship participants! Your worship team is thrilled to have people in the room – worship just isn’t the same without seeing your faces! Watch for the sign-ups each Monday for the following Sunday.

At the same time, church experts tell us that virtual worship is here to stay. When you worship with us online, you may have noticed names you don’t know or read comments from people who are unfamiliar. That’s because there is a whole group of people who have never stepped into our building, and yet have found connection with our church community virtually!  It has been the coolest thing emailing, zooming and chatting with digital worship participants who want to know about our church, our programs, our outreach – who want to join fellowship groups and find out how to join our membership. I would never have anticipated this level of engagement – but it has been a special blessing!

There are others who have been joining from far away – Florida, Indiana and Texas are states that regularly represent in our virtual worship. How amazing is it that families can be connected from far away through OUR worship services, and that people can feel the love, care and support of a community of faith across so many miles!?

Which brings us to some interesting questions and challenges for the future. How do we continue the strong engagement with the online community that we’ve had over the past year when some people are returning to in-person experiences? We have the future of two heathy communities – one online and one in-person.  What a great opportunity to consider and to figure out how to best support both arenas of worship and connection.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas about this potential future. Send me and email or give the church office a call – I’m always ready to connect with you.

Peace, Rev. Sandi

Participants will need to agree to stay masked and socially distanced (even if you’ve had the vaccine), and stay home if they feel sick.

Additionally, when the weather is nice, we will encourage BYOC (Bring Your Own Coffee) Fellowship time after worship in the courtyard!

Finance Committee Update
Hello WPUMC family.

I wanted to take this opportunity to share what’s happening with the preschool and the current fundraiser. Our preschool playground has been deemed out of date by state standards and is in need of a total overhaul. We have two wonderful moms, Casidy McNally and Apryl Walker, spearheading a fundraiser – Pennies for our Playground.

The new playground will include pour-in-place rubber surfacing that is durable, soft, and resistant to wear. It is also safer for falls and will replace the woodchips currently in place. There are currently two sides to the playground; one for the younger children, and one for older classes. There will be new age-appropriate play structures on each side that also features pieces that align with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning.

An online auction took place from April 23rd-April 30th along with a classroom Penny War collecting over $2000.00 in loose change! In addition, there have been "Dine Out" events at local restaurants giving the preschool a percentage of the proceeds, sponsorships from business owners, and family donations as well.

Fundraising is always a special challenge, especially after the past year. I know we have wonderful people behind the scenes making it run, as well as amazing parents and church community, all working hard for our kids, and I’d like to personally thank each and every person involved.

Please keep the preschool, especially the current fundraiser and playground renovation in your prayers.

Semi- Annual Church Volunteer Day
On Saturday, May 15, 2021, the Missions Committee will host a volunteer day for friends and family of WPUMC. Volunteers will meet in the parking lot of the church at 8 a.m. The event will end at noon. All tools and supplies will be provided. There will be opportunities for all age groups. Volunteers will be split into two teams: 1) a church team to take on tasks around and in the church building; and, 2) a neighborhood team that will do a trash pick-up mission in the Washington Park East neighborhood. Both teams will be required to practice social distancing and wear masks as applicable. Please remember that if you feel sick or have been diagnosed with COVID that you should abstain from participating.

Please sign up below and include the number of people that will be in your group.
