A MESSAGE FROM The Rev. Tina Rathbone
We celebrated something called Trinity Sunday last weekend – the only Sunday of the year given over to the three-in-one nature of God. It is often taught that it is easier to say what God is not, than what God is – and I think this is true to a certain extent. But the revelation that God is both One and Three ensures that mystery remains lodged in the heart of the Christian faith and gives us ground to explore a little…

If God is One, I asked myself the other day as I crossed a field of three leafed clover, doesn’t this mean that God is harmony and peace? And if God is also Three, doesn’t this mean that God is not singular only, but also communal? And if God is communal in all of God’s Oneness, doesn’t this mean there must be space somehow between the community members – and so at least the possibility of access and inclusion for the rest of us?

Who knows? But the fact that people have been asking questions like these for millennia brings me both hope and courage. Because I believe that we too are called to be united in our solitude – joined with and through our diversity until we become a complete and harmonious whole. How will you join with another who is different from – and also deeply united with - you this week? How will you emulate the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

GIDEON'S GARDEN
The field is fully planted now; I have even seen tiny fruit on the sweet peppers, cherry tomatoes and a forming head of cabbage already.

And we still have many, many plants left we are distributing throughout our community to People's Pantry, Lee Pantry, and families at Undermountain Elementary School in Sheffield. We will also support our community partners at BRIDGE as they have started a community garden in raised beds at the Fairgrounds in Great Barrington!
A reminder that we also have public volunteer hours Wednesday 2-5pm so if none of the below times work for you, anyone is welcome to visit Wednesday 2-5 as well. Feel free to join us anytime during these slots, no worries about showing up for the last 30 minutes. Even just popping in to say hello and check on our progress is much appreciated.

These volunteer hours will remain the same for the rest of the season!

UKRAINE CRISIS FUND: Urgent aid for 4 million — Give now
CARE’s immediate crisis response aims to reach 4 million with your help.
Give now to rush urgently needed water, food, hygiene kits, and ongoing support for Ukrainian families.
The following note is from Ludmyla (Myla), who Andrea Saville White met through a knitting, and weaving website community.

I live in NJ with my husband and our two daughters, but I was born in Ukraine - Zhytomyr, a small town near Kyiv, and lived for 21 years in Kharkiv, Ukraine. All my grandparents, great grandparents, uncles, and aunts are buried there. My first school, first love, first steps, first friends, best friends, college and smiles and laughter, and peace - all left in the past.

What can I say without tears - I stand against this horrible war; I stand with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. So, so many of my friends and their families and some of my relatives are still left in Ukraine all over the country.

We try and help every single day with whatever we can - whether it’s meds, trying to get people out from hot spots - like from under the shelling in Kharkiv and Dnipro - volunteer with local organizations, send help to so many of my friends who are refugees in Poland, Romania, Hungary, Germany, and Latvia, and help our amazing volunteers who are right there on the ground whether it’s on the border or in Ukraine.

Days begin with checking if all the people I know are alive and end with checking on the news and what I could help with following.

I can’t be on the front lines and fight for my homeland physically, but I can knit and help with information.

NO WAR. Spread the word. Don’t stay silent.
May there be PEACE in the world.

Babies are placed in the Home when their mother has died and they cannot be cared for at home.
It costs about $1,500 to support a baby over the time needed for the child to grow old enough to return to their home. Many years ago we at Grace decided to support babies at the Mampong Babies Home in Ghana at the rate of $1,500 per year. Your donations help us reach that goal each year. You can bring money or checks to church on Sundays and place in the jar near the Welcome table or send a check to Grace Church, PO Box 114, Great Barrington, MA 01230.

CELEBRANDO LA ABUNDANCIA DE DIÓS
Rooted and rising in love: A summer solstice retreat
In-Person with the Rev. Dr. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas

Tuesday, June 21 • $80 (includes lunch) financial assistance available
9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
(registration and coffee begin at 9:00; program starts at 9:30 a.m.)
Led by the Rev. Dr. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas

As we celebrate the beginning of summer and the Northern Hemisphere’s longest day of the year, let’s reflect together on our sources of courage and hope. In the face of converging social and ecological crises, what spiritual practices and perspectives can sustain us? As we struggle to protect the web of life and to create a more just society, where do we turn for meaning and strength?

This one-day retreat, held in the beautiful landscape of the Rolling Ridge Retreat & Conference Center in North Andover, will include a mix of presentations, small group conversations, individual reflection, and free time for contemplative wandering and prayer. Together we will explore a framework for the heart to help us become compassionate, prophetic leaders who can take up the mantle of moral leadership that this decisive moment in history requires.

During the pandemic, Rev. Margaret presented this retreat online in several venues. Even if you’ve reflected on this material before, our June retreat will give us a chance to absorb the same material in each other’s embodied presence and in the company of a lake, woods, hiking trails, and an outdoor labyrinth and chapel.

Retreatants are welcome to stay overnight for an extra charge, by making arrangements with Guest Services Director, Lee O'Brien ([email protected]).

To request financial assistance from Diocese of Western MA, contact Kim Foster ([email protected]).

Our final meeting of the spring term was held on May 31. After a discussion of prayers of intercession, we wrote the following collect:

THE POWER OF PRAYER
O God! Glorious Creator.
We are powerless without you.
We know you are listening even when you seem aloof and your ways mysterious.
Our gratitude knows no bounds.
Thank you especially for this group and for other spiritual circles of which we are a part.
We pray that you keep bringing us into closer relationship with you and with others.
Help all those in the world living with fear to find your peace.
Through your son Jesus Christ, Our Lord, AMEN.

Second Sunday after Pentecost
Luke 8:26-39

Jesus and his disciples arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me" -- for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" He said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss.

Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.

Go Down Moses
This remarkable scene from Preston Stugis's film Sullivan's Travels released in 1941 ironically depicts a white chain gang being welcomed into a Black Church. It is a story about a Hollywood director of light comedies who wants to experience suffering before making a socially relevant film about hard times. It is one of the first American movies to depict African Americans in a dignified manner rather than as servants or comic relief.

WHAT ARE YOU
GRATEFUL FOR?
In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.

SUNDAY SCHOOL
Kids of all ages:
Please join us for Sunday school. We will meet during the first part of the service and then
re-join the service at the Peace.

Mark commented on Koa’s work, “Dude, that is so beautiful.”
Koa answered, “Thanks, I like yours too.”
Vivi - I love these stamps!
Andrea - I love how you placed them on your picture.

We also learned about some garden vegetables relevant to our pictures.
A DAY IN SUNDAY SCHOOL:
  • We thought about things we cannot see before we listened to a story.
  • Vivi - the wind, ghosts
  • Koa - Love; and we see the trees bend from the wind
  • Mark - Heaven. But I know what heaven looks like. (Andrea asks - I wonder…. Mark, how do you see heaven?) Heaven is a big green lawn with a bridge at the end. When we die, we go over the bridge, and we don’t fall; we go up. (Motions with his hands.) (Andrea - Is that where we meet Jesus?) And all the people who have died
  • We wondered about the Holy Spirit, and the words of Peace Jesus said to help his friends not feel sad about him leaving. And even though we can’t see Him, we know Jesus is with us always. God loves us.
  • We colored pages with the scripture and garden flowers; next week, we will make drawings to hang up in Gideon’s garden to give pictures and words for reflection.
  • We missed the timing to say the Our Father with the congregation - we’ll work on this timing - but we held out our hands to receive the prayer and prayed the Our Father together, bringing our hands to our hearts at the end.
  • AND we had a visit from Mark’s mom, Stacey, who brought Johnny up and some juice and gummy snacks for all to share - and bubbles if we wanted another activity sometime.
  • Vivi showed Johnny how to work the musical turtle. Johnny practiced walking and saying “mmm” with Andrea after each sip of juice. Johnny and Annalise made sounds on different textures around the room and talked about how they sounded and felt.
  • Mark brought “Catboy” and “Spiderman” to hold to help him listen and feel ok. Catboy is from a show that Mark, Koa, and Vivi all know! We, adults, need to catch up.
