San Diego County Prohibits All Gatherings
San Diego County expanded its public health order on Wednesday, April 8, to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus disease, or COVID-19. The health order is in effect until further notice.
Gatherings of any size are now prohibited unless the group lives in the same household. Most recently, the health order prohibited gatherings of groups of 10 or more, with proper social distancing measures in place.
The revised order also expands the requirement for employees of certain businesses to wear face coverings to banks, public transportation and child care providers that serve food.
County officials said they decided to extend the gathering restrictions because people were getting together in parks, beaches and other open space when they should be going out for essential activities only.
The San Diego County public health officer has issued orders that direct certain closures, discourage gatherings of any size and direct social distancing requirements to prevent the disease from spreading.
The City of Coronado encourages everyone in the community to abide by the County’s directives and the governor's "stay at home" order.

Call Center Schedule Change
The City created the Coronado Call Center in March to help answer questions from the community and hear their concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
Effective immediately, the City will no longer take live calls on weekends. This is due to the low number of calls the Call Center was receiving. The Call Center will accept messages on weekends and someone will return calls on Monday. If you have an actual emergency, call 911.
The City continues to encourage residents who have concerns about neighbors and family here, about City services or City business, or questions about school or other resources, to call (619) 522-6380 to talk to someone from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Prescription Drug Drop Box Closed
Due to COVID-19, the Coronado Police Department will not be accepting unwanted/unused prescription drugs at this time.
Please keep any unused prescription drugs locked up and away from children and pets.
As soon as it is possible, the Police Department will let the community know when the program will resume.

New Building, Planning Inspection Protocol
In light of COVID-19, the City's Community Development Department is encouraging the community, consultants and partners to conduct business with City Hall remotely. All City services are by appointment only. Those who require help from building or planning officials are being asked to make appointments by emailing comdev@coronado.ca.us or calling (619) 522-7326.
The following is the Essential Worker Precautions and Protocol now in force for Community Development:
1. Inspections will continue as needed, but inspections pertaining to life, safety and continued habitancy will be prioritized. Inspections beyond those categories may be subject to postponement. Any request will need to be resubmitted through the standard inspection request protocol.
2. Inspections in occupied homes and commercial job sites must be cleared of occupants with the exception of one chaperone (contractor or owner-builder) to accompany the inspector during inspection.
3. If anyone is observed by the inspector to be ill, the inspector has the ability to postpone the inspections until the ill person has left the area of the inspection.
4. Proper social distancing must be observed with inspectors, and if not, the inspector has the ability to postpone inspection until proper precautions are in place.
5. Masks shall be worn by the inspectors and anyone on the job site must also be wearing a protective mask who is to assist in the inspection or interact with the inspector. Failure to wear protective masks will result in postponement of the inspection.
The City thanks residents, builders, consultants and contractors for their cooperation.

Third, Fourth, I Avenue Storm Drain Project
The Third, Fourth, and I Avenue Storm Drain project will install a new 48-inch diameter storm drain pipe underneath I Avenue. It will collect rain water that causes flooding along Fourth Street and transport it to Bayview Park, where it will discharge into the San Diego Bay.
Construction is expected to begin the week of April 13, weather permitting. Initial work will focus on two areas:
- Within Bayview Park, including the removal of two Melaleuca trees and trenching operations;
- Trenching along I Avenue at First and/or Second streets.
This project is anticipated to take several months to complete. The work is expected to progress from First Street up to Fourth Street. Significant traffic control will be required. This will include temporary no-parking zones. Please be aware of traffic control in the area and be prepared for minor traffic delays.
The City is coordinating with the contractor to ensure appropriate sanitary plans and safety precautions are taken throughout construction to address COVID-19 related concerns. For additional information, contact the City’s project manager, Jim Newton, at
jnewton@coronado.ca.us
or (619) 522-7313.

Coastal Campus Project Update
A milestone was reached Wednesday, April 8, when a valve was opened and effluent from the Coastal Campus began being pumped via the newly installed sewer main to the Coronado Cays Pump Station.
The contractor on the Coastal Campus Sewer Main project began work to install the sewer line in December. The new line will transport sewage generated by the new base facilities. The work involved crossing state Route 75 near Old Fort Emory Road using the “jack and bore” tunneling method. To accommodate the required boring pits, the Bayshore Bikeway was temporarily detoured onto the existing shoulder of SR-75, protected from vehicle traffic with concrete K-rail.
The wastewater eventually flows into the San Diego Metro Wastewater system and is transported to the Point Loma wastewater treatment plant and processed. The contractor will now concentrate on clean-up and restoration.
This type of construction is permitted under state and San Diego County guidelines and the contractor is complying with the COVID-19 protocols including face coverings.

MTS Announces Service Reductions
Starting Monday, April 13, MTS will start a modified weekday schedule, due to significant declines in ridership as a result of the coronavirus. About 70% of routes will see a frequency and/or span of service change, but no routes will be cut. At this time, only essential trips should be taken on MTS buses and trolleys (essential workers, groceries, medical, etc.)

Neighbor-to-Neighbor (N2N) is a new voluntary program created through a partnership of local volunteers and your neighbors along with the support of the City of Coronado. N2N is built on neighbors looking out for one another. It's run by local volunteers and services four areas in Coronado: The Cays, the Shores, the Village and Navy Housing. Each area has a different approach in organizing.
In the Village and the Cays if you have received a letter from a neighbor

There is still a need for block captains in the Village. A map of current blocks needing captains was published in this week's Eagle Journal on page 26. Residents of the Coronado Shores are encouraged to contact building managers for information.
