The recent chilly weather has us craving comfort foods. If you're looking to spend some quality time in the kitchen, our farmers have all the fixins for hearty fall soup, stews and casseroles. You'll find Brussels sprouts for roasting, potatoes for baking, peppers for stuffing and winter squash and celriac for creamy purees. Oh, and lots of scrumptious farm fresh meats ready for the crock pot. If baking is your thing, the market is loaded with tart, juicy apples, sweet pears and rich pumpkin for soul satisfying desserts.

If you'd rather leave the cooking to someone else, stock up on pot pies, pasties and pierogi for easy dinners! Or pick your favorite autumn sweets... like fresh baked dumplings, cider donuts and apple crumb pies. Christmas City Spirits is joining us this week too... how about a hot toddy or some spiked cider this weekend?

Salvaterra's Gardens
Discover Thomas Jefferson's favorite apple
This week's feature is the Spitzenburg Apple. The Spitzenburg apple tree was discovered in the late 1700s by an early Dutch settler of that name. It's highly rumored to be Thomas Jefferson's favorite apple. He had many Spitezburg trees planted at his Montecello home! The flavour is sweet, aromatic, spicy and rich, like a fresh pressed glass of cider. The Spitzenburg is a wonderful eating apple and dessert apple and it’s pretty to boot! And what’s that white stuff by the stem of the apple?? It’s kaolin clay, a natural non-toxic insect repellent!

This week's full line-up includes: lettuce mix, arugula, kale collards, head lettuce (red leaf, green leaf), scallions, red beets, carrots, hakurei turnips, cabbage, broccoli, yellow onions, red potatoes, gold potatoes, slicing tomatoes, cocktail tomatoes, eggplant, cilantro, parsley, dill, poblanos, jalapeños, bell peppers and sweet Italian frying peppers, butternut squash, apples and pears.
