Dear parents and guardians,

W e understand that these unprecedented circumstances resulting from the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis have created a work environment for teachers for which no one was prepared. We commend our teachers for their incredible ability to step up, be responsive and lead through these very difficult times. Their leadership, in very large measure, has been the backbone for consistency for students and comfort for our community.

We recognize the need for spring break. The City School District of New Rochelle communicated to teachers and the community at large that the period of time between April 6 and 10, was an important rejuvenation period.

Unfortunately, because of the rapidly changing guidance and directives being issued from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and Governor’s Office, we must change our original plan.

Pursuant to the Governor’s most recent Executive Order, and clarified in an opinion letter we received from counsel, later substantiated by guidance provided by the NYSED, all districts are mandated to continue the following activities, at the levels already established through submitted and approved plans to the NYSED and the Governor’s Office, during the CSDNR Spring Break, April 6 through 10:

  • Distance Learning
  • Childcare
  • Food Distribution

As you know Childcare and Food Distribution efforts were already scheduled to continue. The change to our plan impacts Distance Learning. We know that this impacts teachers and students in ways that were not considered prior to this Executive Order. The CSDNR must comply. Failure to do so is interpreted to mean that the CSDNR could lose State-Aid.

We understand that teachers will have many questions. We are not able to answer those questions at this time as further guidance as it relates to this issue has not been provided. Teachers will be required to continue the teaching and learning efforts they have been engaged in during the period of April 6 through 10.

We also wanted to share that for middle and high schools the 3 rd making period has ended. Please anticipate receiving a pass (P) or incomplete (I) status for each course during this marking period. Ways in which grades are recorded may change based on future guidance.

Once again, the City School District of New Rochelle wants to thank you our teachers for their exemplary work and commitment to our student’s education.

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Dr. Laura Feijóo

Queridos padres y guardianes,

Gracias,
Atentamente,
Dra. Laura Feijóo
