Mental Health Among NAIS High School Students

We have all heard about the increase in depression, anxiety and other mental health issues facing students. Today I am sharing with you a June 2022 report from NAIS, "Mental Health Among NAIS High School Students." This report has attempted to capture the landscape of mental health issues facing high school students as a result of the isolation and trauma caused since the pandemic began.

Comparative data is presented from 2014 -2017, 2019- 2020, and 2021- 2022.

While the report is full of data that raises concern, a standout to me is the increase in the percentage of high school students who have contemplated suicide. There has been a 64% increase in the percentage of NAIS high school students who have contemplated suicide since 2014 - 2017.

This NAIS report is an important read to help school leadership and boards understand the current mental health crisis facing teens. There are implications for boards and their responsibilities with respect to insuring a safe and healthy school community and risk management issues. To that point, I want to share that our ISCA Fall Governance Conference on October 28th will be dedicating a portion of our conference to the governance issues related to the mental health and wellbeing of our school communities.

Save-the-Date for October 28th in Chicago - Details to follow!
