No Name Calling Week
From January 20-24 across the United States, schools will be celebrating No-Name Calling Week.

A little history behind it:  GLSEN's No Name-Calling  Week  is a  week  organized by K-12 educators and students to end  name - calling  and bullying in schools.

Founded in 2004 with Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, and evaluated by GLSEN research, No Name-Calling Week was inspired by James Howe's novel The Misfits about students who, after experiencing name-calling, run for student council on a No Name-Calling platform.This is a week when we are reminded that our words can either make people happy (put-ups) or hurt their feelings (put-downs). Instead of using put-downs and calling ourselves or others mean and hurtful names, we want to focus on using POSITIVE and UPLIFTING words to describe ourselves
and others.

Gilles-Sweet students will be participating in an activity about No-Name Calling Week as well as celebrate with a spirit week.

Tuesday, January 21 will be "Celebrate Your Freedom From Name-Calling!" - Wear red, white and blue

Wednesday, January 22 is "Stay Bright - Name-Calling Takes You to the Dark Side" - Wear neon or bright colors

Thursday, January 23 will be "Put a Cap on Name-Calling" - Wear your favorite hat.

News from the PTA
The Gilles Sweet PTA has been hard at work this school year, and we have some very exciting events planned for the second half of the year! This month we'd like to focus on trying to increase our male membership within the GSPTA, so we're renaming the month "Manuary"  The PTA has a much higher percentage of Gilles Sweet moms who join, so we're asking all of our Gilles Sweet Dads to consider joining the PTA this month.

So, for every 10 men who join the Gilles Sweet PTA through January 31, 2020, the PTA will raffle off one $25 gift card!. If we have 30 men join, we will raffle off 3 gift cards.
Membership forms can be found online at  fppta.digitalpto.com and membership dues can be paid online via paypal, a check/money order (made out to Fairview Park PTA) or cash can be turned in to the office.

The PTA has already tackled a Tailgate party, Fall Festival (4th & 5th grades) Scholastic Book Fair, Turkey Trot, Teacher appreciation dinner, weekly Bowling League, School Store, Santa Shop and so much more.  Our second semester will continue with the Bowling League, Teacher Appreciation, and School Store, as well as adding in the Father-Daughter Dance, Super Saturday, Spring Scholastic Book Fair, Mother-Son event, 5th Grade Party and Field Day.

If you have any questions about the GSPTA or our Manuary January membership raffle, please contact Maureen McDonald ( moegroves716@yahoo.com )

Hello Fairview Park Families!

Film Screening
CyberWork and the American Dream
The Advocates for Progress and Preparedness (a newly formed parent group) will be hosting a screening of  CyberWork and the American Dream  on January 23 at 7:30 PM in the FHS auditorium.

This documentary looks at the impact of robotics and artificial intelligence on the future of work. Since the Industrial Revolution, new technology has increased wealth, freedom and life expectancy. But it has also destroyed outdated businesses and automated jobs. How can the U.S. best prepare for the challenges of this new technological disruption?

APP's mission is to  "Mentor, Network and Broadcast the use of 21st Century Education Models and Tools.  We are advocates f or Educational Progress and Preparedness for the Digital Age. Together we can inspire and encourage the skill of LEARNING. In our fast and furiously changing world, "Learning how to Learn" will be a necessity and a life long skill."

Visit the APP group on Facebook  for more information.
