It is with great sadness that we share the news that lifelong educator and longtime CTAC board member Carol Choye died on April 16, 2020. She was 81 years old.
Dr. Choye was a dedicated and insightful member of CTAC's board of directors for more than 20 years, including serving as board president for 10 years. Both at CTAC and throughout her career, she was a fervent and skilled advocate for equity and social justice.
Dr. Choye's educational career spanned 60 years. She was an outstanding superintendent in both Scotch Plains-Fanwood Schools and Princeton Regional Schools in New Jersey. Her career began in the San Francisco Unified School District in California where she served as Associate Superintendent, Curriculum Coordinator, Area Superintendent, Principal, and Teacher.
She later served as Director of School District Leadership at the Bank Street College Graduate School of Education and as a mentor for superintendents for the New Jersey Department of Education and New Jersey Association of School Administrators. She was also a thoughtful and committed mentor to many students.
Dr. Choye was honored as a finalist for National Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators and was twice named one of the "100 Top Executive Educators in North America" by Executive Editor, a publication of the National School Boards Association.
Dr. Choye served as a leader on national boards and commissions, including the American Association of School Administrators, the McGraw Hill Blue Ribbon Panel of Educational Leaders, The National Faculty, and the Council of Advisors on Education to the Clinton-Gore Education Transition Team.
Dr. Choye's community involvements included serving as a board member of the Princeton Public Library, Fanwood Memorial Library, and the Rotary Clubs of Princeton and Scotch Plains-Fanwood. She served as Chairperson of San Francisco Chinatown YWCA, and as a member of Chinese for Affirmative Action.
Dr. Choye received an Ed.D. in Organization and Leadership from the University of San Francisco, an M.A. in Curriculum and a B.S. in Child Development at the University of California, Berkeley.
She will be very much missed by the CTAC family.
