Students with Life-threatening Conditions

Students with life-threatening health conditions participating in athletics or in-person learning are asked to send all paperwork to the school right away. This includes:
  1. Individual Health Plans – updated and signed by a parent.
  2. Medical Authorization Forms – completed and signed by a doctor and signed by a parent.

Additionally, your student will need to SELF-CARRY their emergency medication anytime they are on campus for a school event such as after-school sports. Please ensure your provider approves the ability to self-carry on the Medication Authorization form. Students that self-carry medications still need their IHP and Medication Authorization turned into the school PRIOR to being able to attend any on campus activity per Washington state law RCW 28A.210.320.

Life-threatening health conditions include:
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy/seizure disorder
  • Asthma – with medications or inhaler
  • Cardiac/heart conditions
  • Allergy – epinephrine injector

Students with missing immunizations

Washington State law requires that all children have immunization records in order to attend school. These records must be on file at the school on or before the first day of attendance. Valid documentation includes medical records showing vaccination, evidence of immunity to the disease the vaccine prevents, or a completed Certificate of Exemption (COE) form.

If you have any questions, please email the nurse – Shelley O’Rourke at sorourke@lwsd.org

“Inoculation was introduced to America by black man"
Inoculation is a process by which immunity is produced by introducing infectious agents onto an absorptive skin surface instead of inserting the substance into the tissues using a hollow needle like an injection. It has many uses, one use is to add effective bacteria to the host plant seed before planting it so that there is enough of certain helpful bacteria in the soil to help plants stay healthy. This process was introduced to America by an enslaved person from Africa. His name is Onesimus. He was a gift to the Puritan church minister, Cotton Mather, from his congregation in 1706.

Onesimus told Mather about a tradition where infectious diseases like small pox were deliberately introduced to uninfected people by extracting the material from an infected person and scratching it into the skin of an uninfected person to increase immunity. Mathers then convinced Dr Zabdiel Boylston to experiment with the procedure when a smallpox epidemic hit Boston in 1721 and over 240 people were inoculated. This procedure was used on American soldiers during the Revolutionary War, which introduced this concept to the United States.”

Due to historic and institutional racism, the African American community and other marginalized communities have been disproportionally impacted by COVID 19 and thus vaccines are important more than ever during this current pandemic.

We would also like to call attention to those struggling during the Houston snow storm. If you are able here is a list of places to provide help to those in need.

Mental Health

As we continue our Mental Health Unit in our 9th grade health and fitness class, we want to extend an opportunity for you to be able to engage in the content too!

In class we are challenging students to recognize factors in their own life that impact their personal mental wellness, learn what they can do to reduce the risk for themselves, and work on building self-esteem and resilience. We have decided to show Angst to help this content come to life since it is very relevant for our students.
This is a documentary that explores anxiety, its causes and effects, and what we can do about it. The main goal of the film is to start a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. We believe by not only showing this to our students but also by providing you the opportunity, we are doing our part in that goal!

We will be showing this to our students in class on Feb 25th/26th but we have also provided an option for the community to view the documentary on their own during those two days as well.

A big thank you to the EHS PTSA, the EHS administration, as well as the Lake Washington Schools Foundation and Overlake Hospital for partnering with us financially to help provide this learning opportunity for our students. It is amazing to know the support that this class, our EHS staff, and our students have as we take on topics like mental health in our classrooms.
