FEBRUARY 2021
Water quality industry updates distilled into what matters.
New Water Treatment Systems Standard Versions Being Adopted
IAPMO R&T is proceeding with adopting the 2019 version of NSF/ANSI 53, Drinking Water Treatment Units - Health Effects, and the 2020 version of NSF/ANSI 58,Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Treatment Systems. Due to changes in the acceptance criteria, this may impact current certifications or any testing that has not started prior to the adoption of the standard on March 8, 2021.

There are two main items in these new versions that may have an impact:
  • The new lead reduction acceptance level will change from 10 ppb to 5ppb. This affects both 53 and 58 listings since the acceptance criteria was changed in both standards.
  • Language that prevents a single failing point during NSF/ANSI 58 performance testing. This affects all performance testing conducted within NSF/ANSI 58.

You will be notified during your 2021 renewal to comply with the new lead reduction requirement level by your 2022 renewal date. You will have until your 2023 renewal to comply with the removal of the single failing point allowance in NSF/ANSI 58.

Please contact your project manager if you have any questions or concerns on these standard updates.
Save the Date: IAPMO R&T Water Systems Forum
IAPMO R&T Water Systems will be hosting our first ever forum, meeting virtually on April 7 from 12:30 to 5:00pm CDT. This forum is intended to keep you and your company up-to-date on the latest in standard and code development, regulatory issues, and IAPMO policies that may impact your testing/listings. This forum will allow you to have a voice to ensure that we are doing everything possible to meet your testing and certification needs.

Industry Spotlight: The Water Equipment and Policy Center (WEP)
The Water Equipment and Policy (WEP) research center is a water research center funded by the National Science Foundation Industry/University Collaborative Research Centers (I/UCRC) program. WEP is a collaboration among University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Marquette University, and 13 industrial members whose annual membership fees fund pre-competitive research that will benefit the water industry. WEP’s industry members direct world renown university scientists and their teams of graduate students and postdocs to pursue promising research that address their most important business challenges. Member companies benefit with access to royalty-free licensing of breakthrough technologies that drive innovation and competitive advantages. Over the past 10 years, WEP has generated over $9 million to fund nearly 100 research projects in four thrust areas: water sensors, novel materials, innovative treatment systems and water policy research. Through research, WEP has addressed industrial partners’ unmet/underserved needs in point-of-use technologies, emerging contaminants, sustainability, and energy conservation.

IAPMO R&T is a WEP member and we encourage clients that are interested in learning more about developing technologies to consider becoming members as well.

To learn more about the center, please email Dave Marsh at marshd@uwm.edu or visit www.wepiucrc.com.
