Spring 2021 Continuing Education Courses

Santa Fe: February 5, 2021

IAIA Continuing Education is once again offering a full semester of online classes and workshops this Spring. To kick off a new year and semester, a free webinar is being offered on February 12, 2021 to anyone that would like to learn more about the benefits of mindfulness and meditation. These techniques are commonly used to lower stress and manage feelings of anxiety and depression, improve sleep, and promote emotional health. This is especially important during this time of pandemic. You can sign up for this webinar, "Using Mindfulness and Meditation to Cope with Anxiety", and all CE classes at www.iaia.edu/cecourses.

This semester's schedule features unique and affordable educational offerings, including live, local, and online classes, webcasts, and webinars offered on a first come, first served basis. There are free webinars available including one hosted by the IAIA Land-Grant program, "The 4 Directions Projections: Sharing traditional and contemporary Indigenous knowledge to nurture people, revere places, and promote purpose." The series focuses on traditional knowledge and culture featuring speakers from across Indian country.

Every semester there are courses that assist business owners, entrepreneurs, and artists to develop important skillsets. Professional development classes this semester include Etsy Craft Entrepreneurship, Essentials of Great Product Photography, Strategies for Protecting Your Art, Technology Basics, A Guide to Website Development, and the Art of Project Management.

If you want to learn how to Indigenize your diet, you can virtually cook alongside Mariah Gladstone (Blackfeet/Cherokee) from Indigikitchen as she prepares family friendly whole food meals. Her class series, "How to Squash Dinner with Ease" is a four-part series focusing on healthy squash-inspired recipes that use readily available and affordable foods. The recipes and ingredients will be provided within 2 weeks in advance of each class.

If you want to learn about photography from an Indigenous lens, Amber-Dawn Bear Robe (Siksika) will teach her class, "History of Photography from Indigenous Perspectives"

Also included in the Spring schedule are writing classes such as "Bones of Creative Writing", and "Contemporary Indigenous Literature". There's also "Self-Publishing 101" that offers guidance and the "how-to" for writers on how they can self-publish their literary works. If you are a beginner or intermediate Indigenous language learner, you can learn strategies, and techniques in "Learning Our Languages" classes held throughout the semester.

Here's what Continuing Education students had to say about their classes last semester:

"I enjoyed all aspects of this workshop. The instructor was fantastic and gave the class extremely useful and helpful information. I can't say enough about how wonderful the experience was. Thank you!
10/28/20 - Student from "Grant-Writing for the Arts and Non-Profit Professionals"

"I like the informal nature of the class and being introduced to writing strategies
and hearing other writers read their work."
10/31/20 - Student from "Journaling into Creative Writing"

"The class put into perspective an organized methodology by which one can better grasp and acquire the language they are learning."
12/3/20 - Student from "Learning our Languages"

If you missed a webinar last semester, some recent webinars have been posted to the IAIA Continuing Education website or you can view them on Vimeo (https://vimeo.com/showcase/5899957).
