In his father's green box, author Jim Kurtz found a cache of clandestine photographs taken in European POW camps during WWII. Some of these are rare and will be in our film; others are in circulation. While we’re working from home, we think it’s a good time to reveal more of the pictures and ask readers to help us learn sources and possibly names of the photographed faces. Just imagine the circumstances under which the pictures were taken: dedicated POWs either built their own cameras from smuggled parts, or bribed the guards to bring in a camera and film. For escape purposes, they used them to take pictures for fake I.D.s; for personal and intelligence reasons, they used them to record brief glimpses of life in the camps. Robert Kurtz, shared in this camp life – and for a moment in time, it looked like the photos above.
