Book Review: Library Staff

"...there are children who dress up as women and prostitute themselves. And somebody is killing them..."

Peter Matschek, Gold Mine Processing Associate, recommends The Alienist by Caleb Carr.

Note: The term “alienist” comes from the fact that, prior to the twentieth century, people who were mentally ill were considered to be "alienated" from society. Those who studied them were therefore called alienists.

The Alienist takes place in 1890s New York City in the slums. In some of the seediest establishments, there are children who dress up as women and prostitute themselves. And somebody is killing them...

Book Beat: Student Book Review

Hello! My name is Jasmine.  I am 11 years old and live in Ketchum, Idaho. I love ski racing, snow/winter, and many other fun things. For my Book Beat review, I read The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin.

The Thing About Jellyfish follows a middle school aged girl named Suzy Swanson, heartbroken, but healing.

Suzy Swanson is a girl who’s quirky and different, not afraid to speak what’s on her mind. That is until she finds out that her former best friend, Franny, drowned during a vacation to Maryland. Suzy is heartbroken and can’t get over the fact she’s dead.

While grieving Suzy falls in a state where she refuses to talk, shutting herself out...
