Mark Vogl, Project Manager at Great Rivers Greenway District will lead us in discussion on the development and projects of the Brickline Greenway and explore how communities are being impacted or will be impacted by the greenway. Formerly known as the Chouteau Greenway, Brickline will connect Forest Park to the Gateway Arch and provide connections to Fairgrounds Park and Tower Grove Park, running between Boyle Avenue and Sarah Avenue within the City of St. Louis.

This evening program will help you and your organization identify available tools and standards - such as the AIA Re-occupancy Assessment Tool and the USGBC LEED Safety First Pilot Credits - that can be used to address COVID-19 in our environment, while also exploring what can be expected regarding how facilities will need to be continually modified to address the continued issues with COVID-19.

USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter believes everyone should have access to green buildings and green communities as well as green building education. Those eligible to apply for these scholarships include:
  • Individuals of diverse backgrounds and/or in under-represented socio-economic groups. 
  • Organizations or individuals that serve under-represented socio-economic groups and/or diverse communities. 
  • Emerging Professionals with an interest in the sustainability of our region. For the purpose of this scholarship, we will consider Emerging Professionals to be recent graduates or current students.

St. Louis lags well behind other cities in the number of charging stations per capita, according to Heather Navarro, 28th Ward Alderwoman, and adding electric charging stations can make it easier for people to help the environment by using electric vehicles (EV).

The suite of new EV Ready Board Bills 163, 166 and 181 incorporate EV ready requirements into the building code. The bills were approved by the Board of Aldermen on January 22 and define 'EV ready' as designing and constructing or renovating a building in a way that facilitates and optimizes the installation of electric vehicle supply equipment.

The number of electric-powered vehicles in St. Louis is rapidly increasing and requiring the installation of an EV ready system during new construction of homes and commercial buildings would make it cheaper for building owners than if they became EV ready later. "It would be four to six times higher if you do it after the fact," said Navarro.

Sustainability passion: The immediacy and urgency of climate change compels us to connect our actions in energy efficiency, waste management, green purchasing and access to healthy food to carbon footprint to create better outcomes for the communities in which our facilities are located. 

Most meaningful experience with USGBC: In 2011, Jaime Kelley and I were hired by the Missouri Gateway Chapter to create a two-day exam prep course for the new Green Associate credential, and to teach the course several times. Sharing knowledge and helping others to demonstrate their sustainability and green buildings expertise was a tremendous experience. My co-instructor and I had a lot of fun teaching the course, and we appreciate every student that attended. 

What will most impact the future of green building: Focusing on Scope 1 (direct emissions from facilities), Scope 2 (Indirect emissions from purchased energy) & Scope 3 (all indirect emissions, not included in Scope 2, that occur in the value chain, including both upstream and downstream) emissions will help us focus on high-impact opportunities that will mitigate the impacts of climate change.  

Favorite LEED Project: I was Interiors Project Manager with Christner for the first Express Scripts headquarters building on the UMSL campus. We had a fantastic team of owner, developer, architect, engineers, construction manager, furnishings supplier and contractors to deliver an innovative, well-designed project that continues to serve the client well. 

Favorite place in the St. Louis region: Forest Park. It is a short bike ride from my home. I have spent countless hours at the art museum, history museum, zoo, science center, skating rink, plus simply walking and riding all times of the day and all seasons of the year. After struggling through a Couch to 5K program, I ran many 5K races in the park. I enjoyed morning outdoor yoga at the Grand Basin. I met up with friends to sketch on a hillside near the World’s Fair Pavilion. Shakespeare in the Park is an absolute delight on a warm summer evening, as is seeing a show at the MUNY. I have fond memories of watching my daughter play soccer and tennis, and my son run cross country in the park. Forest Park is the gift that keeps on giving. 
Schools, parks, congregations, and gardening and conservation groups are invited to submit proposals to the Missouri Prairie Foundation's (MPF) Prairie Garden Grants Program by March 15, 2021 to help fund the establishment of prairie gardens or plantings in their community!
High vacancy rates and an aging housing stock disproportionately impact the health and
safety of St. Louis’ communities of color. The St. Louis Vacancy Collaborative is requesting proposals to hire a consultant to conduct process mapping of St. Louis’ code enforcement system and provide technical expertise and recommendations for a more strategic and equitable code enforcement system.

Proposals due, Friday, February 12, 2021 by 5:00 pm - emailed to Tara Aubuchon at tara@communitybuildersstl.org. Interested applicants can also reach out with questions or to request more information.

A few qualifications desired include; expertise in operations and quality improvement related to code enforcement and knowledge of how data and data sharing can be used to leverage strategic code enforcement efforts, with a commitment to keeping racial equity at the center of the work.
