Message from the Senior Pastor

New Callings

I am so pleased to announce that our brother in Christ and fellow HCC member, Winston Janusz, has been called to be the Associate Pastor of Peace Church, United Church of Christ, in Rochester, Minnesota. Winston will be ordained on September 27 via Zoom. I am honored to be offering the sermon. I will let you know once we have information about how to virtually attend the service that day so that we can support him.

Many of us are feeling called in new directions these days. The pandemic has required us to figure out how to connect and lead in new ways. The movement to end racism and violence against our Black neighbors has inspired many of us to get involved in the push for social and political change. The loss of family members, friends, neighbors, and heroes has increased our empathy and opened us up to new avenues of compassion.

As life progresses... as we age... as our interests evolve... as we meet new people... as society changes... as our children grow and leave home... as we experience loss... we become new people. We see ourselves and the world in new ways and we hear the Divine calling us to new roles and new ways of being. As summer progresses, how do you imagine autumn? How will you spend your time and what impact do you see yourself making on our hurting and beautiful world?

God's still-speaking voice is there for us if we are willing to listen. It's in the word, the wind, the birdsong, the music, the cries of the oppressed, and deep within each one of us.

Note from our Assistant Moderator - John W. Pint

As the temperature climbs and humidity builds, sometimes to uncomfortable levels and seemingly without relent, I remind myself how fortunate we are to live in Hingham and be near the water, able to catch a cooling breeze or experience a watercolor-worthy sunset. Or having the modern luxury of indoor air conditioning in the house or car. Some days, the simple comfort of a shade tree or patio umbrella offers a fresh-air respite from the computer screen in my home office. My kids often remind me that a backyard paddling pool when it is too hot can soothe both tired feet and a weary soul.

While uncertainty abounds, the pandemic has also offered the opportunity to be present in the moment. Most days, it feels like our family is coping with life a day at a time and reaching the end of the day only by the grace of God. Often, we find ourselves taking a moment to express gratitude for making it through another one. A mantra I try to use is to see this period as a once-in-a-lifetime (I hope) opportunity to spend loads of time with my kids while they are still young - an opportunity that ordinary work, travel, daycare, school, and daily life might otherwise have inhibited. While not without challenges, the time together has been a blessing and will (I hope) lead to a stronger family bond.

On those days when life in this moment seems overwhelming, I permit myself to peek ahead - just a little - to the coming autumn season, which is my personal favorite. While the day-to-day seems uncertain, I find the leaves changing, cooler mornings and evenings, and general feeling of renewal that comes from making it through a long hot summer provides a comforting backdrop. This gives me renewed hope that our community will pull through this challenge, stronger and more resilient. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Outdoor Services Coming!

Please plan to attend our first in-person worship services since early March. The Back to the Building Working Group, the Board of Deacons, and the Board of Trustees have been carefully planning a series of outdoor services to be held on the HCC campus on August 16, 23, and 30. We will hold two services on each of those Sundays, one at 8:30 a.m. and one at 10 a.m. Masks will be required and we will guide each individual, couple, or family group to a safe space, distanced from others. A much more detailed message will be coming soon. Until then, please anticipate RSVP-ing on our HCC website and bringing your own masks, lawn chairs, and mobile devices (for the bulletin, which will be emailed to you). I am very excited to worship with  you in person!

During July and August, we need YOU to provide music for worship services--this is your chance to record that piano piece you've been practicing, make a video singing the solo you have always wanted to hear in church, get your old band back together over Zoom or SoundTrap, practice your dijeridu, make a joyful noise in a music video, for the Sunday service!
For encouragement or more info, text or call David Giessow at 617-686-2581.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK:

                "SHAVE THE PEAK"

On these hot and humid summer days when demand for electricity shoots up, dirty power plants come on line to fill the need. We can avoid/limit the need for that by doing several things - especially from  mid-afternoon until about 8pm. (esp. 4-ish-8-ish)
1) Turn A/C off or up a degree or two;
2) Avoid running high-energy appliances (washers, dryers, dishwashers; and
3) Avoid charging your electric car (if you have one of
course).
Let's do our part to keep today and tomorrow from being worse.

"USE WISELY..."  HELP US CARE FOR OUR FRAGILE ENVIRONMENT BY REDUCING WASTE.
