RECOGNITION
Board Honors Student Trustee Pablo Leon
The Board of Trustees recognized student trustee Pablo Leon for his service as a member of the Associated Students of Napa Valley College (ASNVC) board from May 2019 to August 2020. Mr. Leon was elected to serve as the student member of the Napa Valley College Board of Trustees and represented the ASNVC, working to bring positive change in the college community as a student leader. We wish him well as he heads to UC Davis!

ACTIONS
Board Passes Resolution in Support of Student Equity and Inclusion
The Board of Trustees discussed and approved a board resolution on dismantling systemic racism and providing a foundation that supports all students of color.

Agreements Approved
The Board of Trustees approved partnership agreements with:

Napa County Emergency Operations Center (EOC): Approved renewal of Health Occupations intern placement agreement with Napa County Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

Pacific Union College (PUC): Approved MOU to provide ESL classes to international student residents at PUC. 

BE Development, Inc.: Approved a resolution to allow the District to enter into an Energy Service Agreement; and authorized the District to enter into an agreement with BE Development, Inc. for installation of an energy-saving system.

Clarke & Associates Educational Consultants: Approved an agreement with Clarke & Associates to assist with planning, developing, writing, submitting and evaluation of a competitive United States Department of Education Talent Search Program grant application proposal. The grant is in the amount of approximately $1,603,200.00 over five years and does not require a District match.
UPDATES
Overview of Mental Health Services for Students
The Board received an update on mental health services available to Napa Valley College students.

Presenters Included:

  • Glynis Banks, LCSW, clinical social worker, student veteran health program/community outreach program (Napa County) San Francisco VA Healthcare Center
  • Paola Latorre-Rey, LCSW, mental health therapist - MENTIS Center for Mental Health Services
  • Magdalena Orr, MFT, Napa Valley College mental health therapist/Student Health Center

The team was able to shift quickly into remote tele-health, transitioning all students and continuing to work with them during a particularly challenging time. The speakers also shared success stories about individual students they have been able to support in recent months.

2020-2021 Sabbaticals Extended to 2021-2022
The Academic Senate approved a one-year extension for the sabbaticals previously awarded to Dr. Aaron DiFranco and Dr. Iris Dunkle. Travel restrictions and Shelter-in-Place orders related to COVID-19 have prevented them from carrying out their approved projects. The District shared its acceptance of the Senate recommendation to defer these sabbaticals from academic year 2020-2021 to 2021-2022.

Update on Campus
Student Housing Project

Vice President Robert Parker provided an update on the the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) process for the Campus Student Housing Project. The 30-day public comment period begins on Monday, August 17, when the public will be able to review and comment on the 95-page document on the District's website. CEQA considers both the impacts of construction and after completion when project is in operation. It is expected to come to the board on October 8 for adoption and construction would then begin summer 2021.
