A Little Bit of CAPA History

The original food fest was a membership drive and a way to unite the Asian Pacific Americans and the community at large through food and culture. The smaller versions of food fest changed to Taste of Asia - specific Asian country, Korea, Thailand and as a change then to the much larger version of the Asian Fest (2016, 2018, 2019) to appeal to a larger audience and normally held in July/August. This had to be cancelled this month due to Covid.

Organizing the event fell under the functions of the membership and the culture.

Census 2020
Have you filled out your 2020 Census yet?

Things like school lunches, medical care, roads and bridges and educational programs all need your help to get the most funding possible. It only takes 10 minutes to fill out the census online.

You can fill out your census online today when you go to www.2020census.gov and include everyone who lives or stays at your home. Filling out the Census form online is one of the most powerful community-building activities we can all do safely right now.

The U.S. Census is one of the few things in the United States that actually connects every single one of us. No matter your age, gender or ethnicity, you are strongly encouraged to take part. It doesn’t matter how you dress or the language you speak. The Census tells us all that we are part of one, huge, diverse community throughout Michigan and the rest of the United States. It is written into the U.S. Constitution as “every person,” period. No exceptions and no exclusions.

Right now, most households are receiving an invitation through the U.S. Postal Service to respond online. The invitation has instructions and a unique census ID number you enter as you fill out the online form. It also has instructions on how to respond by phone.

You don’t have to leave your home, or even open your front door. Just sit down and be counted at www.2020census.gov. If you haven’t seen the Census invitation, you can still fill out the survey.

Households have until August 14 to complete the 2020 census!

There are several Census “helplines” available if individuals have questions about completing the Census. Some of those helplines include:

Michigan Census Team: 833-823-6787
U.S. Census Bureau (English): 844-330-2020
NALEO: 877-352-3676
Arab American Institute: 833-333-6864
Committee for Civil Rights: 888-268-6820

COMMUNITY'S RESPONSE
TO THE PANDEMIC - PHASE 5
Reported By: Arcie Gemino

With summer in full swing, we continue to face more challenges and uncertainties amid the pandemic. Though we've begun to re-engage some aspects of former living with certain restrictions, the fact remains we're into this turmoil and chaos for the long haul. Still our resolve remains strong in our determination to get through this and that is why we still have individuals and organizations continuing to push for more feel good stories to help us see and help us spread the light. Here are the latest:
FILAMCCO, FILAMCCO FOUNDATION AND NANAY - These organizations remain solid in their purpose to lead the community with their devotion to human welfare. Led by presidents Wilmar Suan, Tess Porcalla and Becky Tungol, the trio's collaborative initiative for July is to provide financial assistance to the Vincent's Help Project in the Philippines. Initial arrangements had been made by Tess Porcalla with the priests of St. Vincent de Paul who run and manage the project. The theme is titled: "Bridge of Love" (Pantawid Ng Pag-ibig)...
PHILIPPINE ASSOCIATION OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGISTS - MI CHAPTER (PAMET) led by one of the youngest if not the youngest president among FILAMCCO member organizations, John Ko and the PAMET will not be outdone with COVID outreach. He reports that their lab colleagues are on the frontline working longer hours to meet COVID-19 testing demands, validating point of care testing platforms and maintaining blood supply...
FILIPINO AMERICAN NATIONAL HISTORICAL SOCIETY- (FANHS-MI) The organization under the lead of its president Aurora Harris and the We the People of Detroit volunteers unlocked 600 cases of hand sanitizers for the Detroit Distillery truck to distribute to those without water in Detroit and Flint. 21 million Americans did not have access to safe drinking water in 2015...
SALVATION ARMY (SA) -This is the largest social service in the U.S. operating for more than 150 years. Despite Michigan's stay home policy for a period of time, volunteers bravely face clients on almost daily basis to carry out their missionary work. Major Romy Alip past Kiwanis of Cosmopolitan Detroit president is the Coordinator of SA's Intercultural Ministry. He holds a monthly Filipino Fellowship attended by a good number of friends in the community...
PHILIPPINE AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER OF MI (PACCM) Despite lockdown, President Becky Tungol and Executive Director Tony Kho had been graciously accommodating organizations in small groups of 10 to hold their planning sessions for COVID outreach. Such support stems from their desire to assist any organization or individuals giving their time, energies and resources to give relief to frontliners and those affected by the virus...
UP ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF MI - (UPAAM) -The current organization president, Victoria Bryan reported the group's plans to award monetary help to fellow alumni of UPAAM and their families who were directly affected by the pandemic...
RAUL AND NORA PEREZ- This couple ventured on their own initiative to help residents of the Archdiocese of Malaybalay, Bukidnon in the Philippines. With the assistance of Fr. Elric Jorquia, the couple's $300 monetary donation was able to provide food to 120 frontliners and 20 of the poorest families in the province of Bukidnon...
DENNIS AND LOLITA GOSIOCO
Michigan Circulo Pampangueno President Dennis Gosioco is no longer a neophyte in the process of giving. After successfully achieving pandemic projects in the past 4 months on behalf of the organization , he has moved on to tell a different story... a story close to home and with a special meaning to his heart. Decades before Dennis embarked on his own leadership, his deceased sister Adoracion Brillantes Tuanquin was a remarkable nurse pioneer well remembered for her outstanding community leadership...
JEFF AND ELEONOR JENKS -This tireless couple had been on a roll since the pandemic outbreak with no signs of slowing down. Recently, they distributed food to 8 families with a total of 30 people in the group. This is done on a weekly basis to families in various areas of Metro Detroit...
Editor's Note:

KIND REMINDER: Please continue we can all pool our financial resources to help the vulnerable, the helpless and those in most need. I encourage you to continue sending your donations. Make checks payable to FILAMCCO FOUNDATION, put COVID-19 in the memo and mail to treasurer:
Lily Ambrosio Ylen, 36707 Tulane Dr., Sterling Heights, Mi. 48312
This is the 5th phase and 5th publication of our community report. If I continue to receive more stories beyond the 5 month period, I encourage you to submit them. At this juncture I would like to personally thank Tony Kho, my unwavering sidekick who tirelessly worked with me in the final layout and publication of these reports, whose invaluable assistance is boundless. And to all of you who had gone all the way and beyond to demonstrate your love and caring for mankind in these most trying times of our lives, THANK YOU!

These unprecedented times are sole reminders that the Lord puts circumstances in our lives to grow us to be dependent on Him versus our own strength. We have to learn to give it up to Him because we are not in control of circumstances in our lives. And in His perfect timing calm and peace will be restored. THANK YOU!
