Please join us in welcoming Andrea Pippins to the Full Circle Lit family!

It is a joy to be bringing Andrea’s vibrant, meaningful art to more readers everywhere.

Born and raised outside of DC to a Brazilian mother, Andrea is a citizen of the world. An artist, designer, and professor, she is a true third culture kid, who speaks conversational Portuguese but now lives and works in Stockholm! Andrea trained and worked as a graphic designer before transitioning to illustration.
“I realized I was solving all of my design problems with illustration. Telling visual stories is a creative passion of mine; I love creating a singular image to convey a message.” Since then, you’ve seen her work all around you, from Hallmark to graphics for HBO’s Tina Turner documentary and Nick Jr.’s Alicia Keys collaboration to last year’s USPS Kwanzaa stamp. Blink and you might have missed her hot Five Below collection that immediately sold out!
Her library of book projects to date features vibrant colors and celebratory graphics that reflect joy while highlighting stories and people who are moving through life with a sense of grounded self-awareness.
Andrea takes a markedly celebratory approach to self-awareness, emphasized by bright, eye-catching color, often using her talents to shed lights on new aspects of the Black experience and heritage. While she will always jump at the chance to lift up and spotlight women of color in art, media and design, she emphasizes the importance of capturing everyday people doing basic, everyday things, especially rituals for self care and wellness.
As a child, Andrea spent years in a sewing studio observing her mother at work, gaining early exposure to and fascination with fashion and stylish women. She will flex her deep understanding of fashion by illustrating the forthcoming Crown picture book for the Smithsonian, MAE MAKES HER WAY, about pioneering milliner Mae Reeves. Andrea often thinks in patterns.

She is fascinated by the Black Arts Movement and has been commissioned to work for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and recently completed the artwork for a book paying homage to one of her art heroes, Faith Ringgold, for The Met.
Her visuals move narratives forward and have become the partner of choice for high profile authors. In Spring 2022, you’ll see her work grace Elizabeth Acevedo’s INHERITANCE (HarperCollins) and more.

Andrea uses both traditional and digital processes. Often, she creates original work with an ink pen, scanning and then applying color digitally. Other times, the entire piece is developed digitally. While she is fascinated by color studies, in addition to her signature candy colored work she does fine line drawings, which have decorated her HEY BABY! And I LOVE MY HAIR books, among others. She also does eye-catching hand lettering.
Andrea says, “As an illustrator and author my mission is to create images that reflect what I want to see in art, design, and media. This means through my books and illustration assignments my work celebrates different standards of beauty; explores ideas of empowerment for women and girls; and highlights visual stories that are often overlooked.”
Andrea will be the first to point out to you that she is more than her Black experience, and she welcomes projects that span her interests. Her dream projects will center on the themes including:

*Family/motherhood
*Books by and about girls and women
*Projects about immigration/being first generation
*The Black Arts Movement
*Folktales, spirituality, magic, mysticism and manifestation
*Anything African, West Indian or Brazilian
*Afrofuturism
*New Orleans
*The Great Migration
*Fashion
*Pop Culture and music
A busy mom of two little ones, Andrea is inspired to help create beautiful new books for young readers that reframe the world and connect them to the power of heritage while illuminating the wide possibilities of their futures.

She creates her breathtaking work in Sweden, where she lives with her family while pushing new visual limits for companies all over the world.
Andrea is developing her own new author-illustrator projects and will continue to collaborate with others on a range of projects, with a particular interest in picture books, book covers for all ages, visual essays/graphic novels, spot illustrations and more. If you have a project related to empowerment or creativity, specifically for girls and women, you’re right up her alley!
