President's Message:

Dear Clients and Friends,

ARE YOU FEELING STRESSED, UNCERTAIN, OR EXHAUSTED AND READY FOR A ONE HOUR BREAK?  WE HAVE ONE FOR YOU!

The current state of the world has left many of us feeling not in control of our lives.  The uncertainty, lack of clarity, and confusion seems to be everywhere.

I hear many tell me they have never washed so many dishes, been wearing only sweatpants, and have children at home.  Others have family members in group homes or nursing homes and they feel helpless because they can't visit.  And we just feel that we need a little time to get rebalanced, as life feels out of kilter and the stress is mounting up.

That's why this month we have invited Shay Beider as our guest to help us all take a little time to get rebalanced and rejuvenated.  I'm excited about being able to offer you this time with Shay to be able to sit back, relax, and learn some techniques to cope.  She has done amazing things in initiatives she has created in Arizona and around the country, and we are blessed to have her with us.  It's for anyone who needs a little rejuvenation right now.  If you have friends and family who might want to participate, please feel free to invite them.  They can click here to register.

Warmest regards,

Mary Anne Ehlert,
Founder & President

Protect Rights of People with Disabilities During COVID-19
Ensure Access to Information, Essential Services For Those Most at Risk
by Human Rights Watch | New York

COVID-19 presents particular risks for many  people with disabilities around the world, Human Rights Watch said today. Governments should make extra efforts to protect the rights of people with disabilities in responding to the pandemic.

"People with disabilities are among the world's most marginalized and stigmatized even under normal circumstances," said  Jane Buchanan, deputy disability rights director at Human Rights Watch. "Without swift action by governments to include people with disabilities in their response to COVID-19, they will remain at serious risk of infection and death as the pandemic spreads."

Globally, more than 1 billion people - roughly 15 percent of the world's population - live with  some form of disability. People who are older, people with chronic health conditions, or people with disabilities - that, for example, affect their respiratory capacity - may be at particular risk of  serious illness or death from COVID-19 infection.  Click here to read more.

Living Under Quarantine: Parents Unite In Face Of Challenges
by Christy Gutowski, Chicago Tribune/TNS

Barbara Murphy has tried to hide her fears from her quarantined 15-year-old son, keeping him calm and occupied while worrying for days that he was infected by the new coronavirus.

The Chicago teen is one of more than 200 students with disabilities at Vaughn Occupational High School who have been asked to remain in their homes since late March 6, when it was confirmed that a special education classroom aide had the virus. His medical fragilities place him at high risk for developing COVID-19; born with a rare birth defect that didn't allow his lungs to grow fully, John also has autism and epilepsy.

"He doesn't understand all this," Murphy said. "He's very confused and wondering why he's not going to school. ... He's a social guy and I think is really missing out on seeing his friends."

Authorities have asked anyone who was inside the Vaughn school building between Feb. 25 and March 6 to remain home - unless they need to seek medical care - through March 18. Though not all family members are subject to the quarantine, many parents such as Murphy are staying in as their child deals with the stresses of home confinement and fear of illness.   Click here to read more.

Video Series Aims To Help Those With Disabilities Stay Fit At Home
By  by Shaun Heasley  |  Disability Scoop

In this time of social distancing, life for many people with developmental disabilities has become largely sedentary, but Special Olympics - and a professional wrestler - are working to change that.

The nonprofit has developed a series of fitness videos led by six Special Olympics athletes and featuring WWE star Becky Lynch that are designed to get people with disabilities moving, all from home.

The videos in the so-called "School of Strength" series promote flexibility, strength, balance and endurance through exercises with varying levels of difficultly ranging from jumping jacks to leg lifts and super squats. They are accompanied by recipes, games, a fitness tracker and other health tips.   Click here to read more.
