I was invited to be the guest speaker tonight for St. Mary's Lenten Soup Supper. I'd accidentally driven by St. Mary Church once before, but I didn't know exactly how to get there and I didn't want to be late. From the St. Anthony parking lot, I typed St. Mary Church into my phone's map. To my surprise, it said that I was only 1.2 miles away from my new familia (Latin and Spanish translation for family).
I shouldn't really say that they are my "new" familia. The Anglo, English, and Latino parishioners at St. Mary's have been part of my Catholic family since the day I was baptized as a 15-day old baby on September 4, 1965. How exciting it was for me to share a bit of my faith journey with these brothers and sisters who will be joining us in a few months.
We look forward to getting to know their Catholic faith story. I'm sure their faith story is similar to ours in a lot of ways, but also very unique with their own culture and traditions added into the mix. Its exciting and a little scary at the same time.
