Lu Kaiwen's village is over 100 miles away from the city of Guilin, Guangxi. Confirmed COVID-19 cases were down, so our worker was permitted to drive to the remote and impoverished village. It took him over three hours to get to Lu Kaiwen's house. The GPS took our worker right to it, even though the house is hidden deep in the mountains. The family lives in a small bungalow - it was meant to be a two or three story home, but they ran out of funds.
A healthy boy greeted our worker at the house. It was hard to believe this was the same boy he saw two years ago with heart disease. This boy was stout and wholesome. He has a 5-year-old sister, who also came to greet us. They thanked our worker profusely when our gifts were handed to them. Kaiwen was born in March of 2012 and at the age of six he had heart surgery at the Affiliated Hospital of Guilin with funds provided by Agape Asia Foundation.
Kaiwen had Congenital Heart Disease when our worker first met him, an ailment that weighed heavily on his parents and grandparents. His grandfather suffered from heart disease in the past as well. His father is working a temporary job over 400 miles from home since they receive very little from the rice paddy field. Because schools have delayed starting, his mother must stay home with her children and is unable to work. His grandparents work in the fields and go up to the mountains to collect wild plants like bamboo shoots and collect wood to cook with.
The family took our worker in as a member of their household. This is a pure and diligent family. They expressed that no one could believe unknown strangers who live so far away in the United States would help their grandson to make him a "wholesome grandson who makes them proud and content for their lives." This is only one of the works made possible by the Agape Asia Foundation - one that has blessed a humble family deep in the mountains of Guangxi, China.
