Just In Time Communication
Dear BK Parents,

Many of you have inquired about Final Exams and the schedule for the last couple of weeks of school. The purpose of this email is to provide clarity on both. I’ll try to be as clear and concise as possible, but I’m afraid it will require more than just bullet points.

We will be running our spring semester until May 22nd, but the last 2 weeks will be different than what was originally scheduled for a variety of reasons. The College Board shifted AP Exams from their original schedule. AP Exams are scheduled at various times during the school day beginning May 11th, and ending on May 26th. The AP Exam schedule change forced us to modify our schedule in order to accommodate students taking AP Exams. If you haven’t read it yet and have a child taking an AP Exam, I strongly recommend you review the recent Just in Time Blog Post on AP Exams .

In addition to the AP Exam change, we are also loosening our historical requirement that all academic classes have a summative assessment (Final Exam). First and foremost, we are giving each teacher the autonomy to determine if a summative assessment is necessary and/or beneficial given the unique situation this spring. We are also leaving it to the discretion of the teacher to determine the breadth, depth, method, and timeframe of the summative assessment IF they choose to give one at all.

With all this considered, and also knowing that many students will need additional time and support to get caught up, we’ve developed a plan to provide structure where necessary while also providing flexibility and trust in our teachers and parents to lead our students to a successful finish line.

We will be continuing our A/B Block Schedule through the week of May 4th-8th.
  • Each of your student's 7 classes will continue to meet twice weekly.
  • These 75 minute block classes meet Monday - Thursday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
  • Fridays are a day for teachers to hold office hours from 9:30 AM - Noon, and an asynchronous (without live instruction) workday for students.

Teachers have been instructed that no additional work or assignments should be assigned beyond the week of May 4th-8th. This doesn’t mean students will not have work to do.

Beginning May 11th, we will still have a structure that will allow classes to meet, but we are leaving it up to the teacher’s discretion on whether or not they will require student attendance for the last two weeks of school. In addition to AP Exams, the last two weeks may be used for teachers to review with students, help students get caught up, facilitate a final assessment, and/or for teachers to work one on one with students as needed to help them finish the semester successfully.

Students will need to pay close attention to the expectations of the teachers for the last two weeks to determine if and when they will attend classes during the structured schedule. Just as importantly, students need to maximize the use of this time to finish the semester strongly.
Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we finish our semester. Please help your students understand these expectations for the remainder of the school year.

Student FAQ for the Last Two Weeks of School
When is the last day I will meet with my classes?
At a minimum, the last block of formal class meeting time is on Wed-Thurs May 6th-7th, with a flex/ asynchronous day on Friday May 8th. After that week, it will vary from course to course. For some courses, your last day of required attendance will be May 7th, for others it may be as late as Tuesday May 19th. Your teacher will communicate this with you through Schoology if they haven’t already.

Will I have schoolwork, etc. after May 8th?
Other than a final exam (teacher optional), no additional work or assignments should be assigned beyond the week of May 4th-8th. However, you are responsible for all work assigned leading up to May 8th and at the teachers discretion may have some time in the last two weeks to get it all complete.

Do I have final exams this spring?
This is a course by course decision. Your teacher will determine if you have a final exam and will communicate when you will take it.

When will I take my final exams?
Again, this is up to the teacher's discretion. It is recommended the teacher chooses among the three blocks on the last two weeks of school and facilitates the final exam during your respective class time (i.e. Either of the following three blocks Mon-Tues May 11-12, Wed-Thurs May 13-14, or Mon-Tues May 18-19th)

What is the primary focus and intended use of time for the last two weeks of school?
The last two weeks of school have three primary focus areas: 1) Provide additional flexibility in time for students that are behind so they can get caught up before the end of the school year 2) Finish BK Classes which may include a final assessment in some cases 3) Create required time for AP Exams
