President's Message
Dear fellow pediatricians and chapter members,
This is an unusual summer with restricted travel, due to the pandemic related reasons. I hope that you are all coping well with the situation.

I would like to welcome our new chapter members, whose names you will find on this newsletter. I encourage each and everyone of them to take an active part in our chapter activities.
Our 31st Annual Pediatric Symposium (virtual) is on August 22, 2020. Organizing this virtual symposium for the first time has been a unique experience for our chapter. Your participation and comments will help us to improve the format for our future meetings - please register.

Member spotlight is a new item on our newsletter. Our chapter vice-president Grant Christman, MD, FAAP, took the lead to be the first one to be on the spotlight. I hope to see more of you participate and make this part of the newsletter interesting, by submitting your personal narratives to be published.  Please contact chapter2@aap-ca.org for more information.

I would like to bring to your attention the article written by Candace Gragnani, MD, MPH, FAAP, on immunizations and the link to register for the upcoming AAP virtual townhall on preparing your practice for the 2020-2021 influenza season.

The School health committee of our chapter led by Alice Kuo, MD, PhD, MBA, FAAP, created a Schools Re-opening FAQs resource document. This will be available for you to access on our website, to provide appropriate guidance on this issue to parents and caregivers.

As you already know, HHS approved $15 billion towards Provider relief fund, for distribution to physicians who provide care for Medicaid patients. CARES Provider Relief Fund application deadline is now extended to 8/28/2020.

I would like to acknowledge the newsletter review board members and thank them for their contribution to our chapter.

Also, I would like to thank the San Bernardino County Medical Society for the timely supply of PPE for our chapter pediatricians to use during their visits to foster care facilities.

Best wishes,

D. Rajasekhar, MD, FAAP

Newsletter Editorial Review Board
The AAP-CA2 Newsletter Editorial Review Board was established in July 2020 to take the chapter newsletter to a new level! Its goals are to highlight educational content and resources of value to chapter members and to showcase our chapter membership while maintaining consistency of style and form across submissions. Meet the 2020-2022 Newsletter Editorial Review Board below.
Sarah Gustafson, M.D. is a pediatric hospitalist at Harbor-UCLA, where she finds joy in teaching and mentoring medical students and residents. Dr. Gustafson loves exploring the Sierra Nevadas. She enjoys baking and sharing her waffles, cookies, and crisps.
Pallavi Kamra, M.D. is a general pediatrician at Clinicas del Camino Real providing care to the underserved population of Ventura County. She is the Early Career Physician Representative for the chapter. Outside of work, she loves exploring the beautiful outdoors of Southern California with her husband and 1-year-old daughter.
Nirupama Madduri, M.D. is a pediatrician in a private practice clinic in Arcadia, CA, and also is a consultant for the Department of Developmental Services. She serves on the chapter’s Newsletter and the Adverse Childhood Experiences Committees. In her spare time, she tries to strengthen her arm balances in yoga; maintain calm by meditating; and enjoys reading Japanese crime fiction.
Christine Thang, M.D. is a general pediatrician at UCLA, where she has been a Bruin since undergrad, medical school, and residency. In addition to chairing the chapter’s Newsletter Committee, Dr. Thang is a member of the Early Career Physicians and Adverse Childhood Experiences Committees. Outside of the clinic, Dr. Thang enjoys being a plant parent to her growing houseplant collection.
The first task of this Board was to standardize newsletter submission guidelines that can be found here. Article submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The newsletter is published the second Sunday of each month.

New sections in the chapter newsletter starting August 2020 are (1) the Spotlight on a Chapter Member, and (2) the Residency Corner. Please direct questions and article submissions to the "American Academy of Pediatrics - CA Chapter 2" <chapter2@aap-ca.org>.

Member Spotlight Articles
The Member Spotlight is written to highlight our chapter membership. Chapter members can submit personal narratives about themselves with a focus on how they maintain their physician wellness in the face of everyday struggles and challenges. Authors may also choose to highlight a practice, volunteer activities, QI projects, etc. The purpose of the spotlight series is to encourage and foster unity and support within the chapter.
Member Spotlight
Grant Christman, MD, FAAP
AAP-CA2 Vice-President
Grant Christman, MD is a pediatric hospitalist at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine at USC. He is currently our Chapter Vice President, and previously, the Chapter Treasurer. Residency Corner Articles
The Residency Corner is dedicated to highlighting resident voices and providing an opportunity to find peer connections across the residency programs in the chapter. It is a space for residents to publish articles on their topics of interest. Submissions from all areas are welcome, including sharing ideas to stay socially connected during residency, describing personal hobbies or passions, highlighting resident research or QI projects, describing advocacy efforts, or providing advice and perspective on transitions during residency. The Residency Corner will rotate monthly to showcase a representative from each of the residency programs in the chapter.
Immunizations
Candace Gragnani, MD, MPH, FAAP
Chapter immunization champion
INFLUENZA - While annual influenza vaccination has always been important, COVID-19 calls for increased efforts to ensure as many eligible children 6 months and older and their family members receive flu vaccinations this year. This will not only help minimize morbidity and mortality from influenza, but also help decrease the burden of influenza on an already stressed health care system in the setting of COVID-19.
The available vaccines for the 2020-2021 influenza season have been updated from the 2019-2020 seasonal influenza immunizations to provide a better match for the influenza viruses expected to circulate in the United States. This influenza season, providers can choose any licensed, age-appropriate vaccination that their patient is eligible and safe to receive with no preference for one versus another. According to the CDC, it is projected that manufacturers will provide upwards of approximately 195 million doses of influenza vaccines this year – the most for any season on record.

Implementation of infection prevention and control policies that include screening patients/caregivers prior to arriving and at arrival to the clinic for flu vaccination is vital to preventing the spread of COVID-19. The CDC states that September and October are generally excellent times to begin influenza vaccination given the potential for decreased protection later in the flu season if the flu vaccine is given earlier. Vaccinations should additionally continue to be offered throughout the influenza season (even into January or beyond) as long as influenza is circulating. The CDC provides general vaccination guidance during COVID-19 as well as specific guidance for vaccination clinics held at satellite, temporary, or off-site locations if that is a part of your planned flu vaccine campaign. Note that, regardless of whether or not they have symptoms, those with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 should have flu vaccination deferred until they meet criteria to discontinue their isolation so as to avoid exposure risk to others.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and the AAP have not yet provided a finalized set of recommendations for the 2020-2021 season. Look out for updates on last year’s recommendations likely later this month and start planning early on how your practice will reach out to ensure the most coverage for your patients and their families.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITY: For any and all interested, please join the AAP virtual townhall on preparing your practice for the 2020-2021 influenza season on August 11, 2020 at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT – you can register here.

AAP Childhood Immunization Flipchart
Get it for your practice
The AAP Childhood Immunization Support Program, a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has developed a Childhood Immunization Flipchart. The flipchart is designed for use by pediatricians and other primary care providers during clinical encounters with patients and families to aid them in conducting efficient, productive conversations about childhood vaccination and giving a strong recommendation for childhood vaccines. It focuses on vaccines routinely provided to children from birth through age 6 years and contains family-friendly infographics and detailed speaking points that providers can use, for each of the 10 vaccines recommended in childhood.

This flipchart was modeled after the Guide to Adolescent Immunizations: Flip Chart for Pediatric Offices and Parents (Adolescent Immunization Flipchart), a highly sought-after tool by primary care providers and others who vaccinate. The flipchart is currently being piloted by 18 pediatric practices, and has thus far had positive comments.

If you would like to request copies of this flipchart to use with patients, please do so here.
