Happy Spring!
Dear CAP Family,
Oh, it feels so good to see green when I look out the window. It has been wonderful to connect with so many of you lately - through Spring Writes, at our Celebration of the Arts, and at our fundraiser at Monks on the Commons! (that's me on the right slinging drinks.)
And a big thanks to everyone who has given to our Creative Recovery Fund. We're just $3,500 shy of our goal of $17,000 - all to be granted back out to artists and arts groups using art to address racial justice, public and mental health and climate change.
We know art has the power to do big things, and there are lots of big things that need to be done. Will you help us reach our goal?

Wishing you all a healthy and energizing June,

Delight and Energy
by CAP Board member Judith Pratt
At Healing Path Studio in Danby, Torie Tiffany creates art and healing flower essences. She also offers Reiki sessions and Tarot readings.
“Each of my practices has been a healing gift for me that I love to share with others,” she explained.
|
|
Her journey began many years ago, during a challenging time.
“I was physically, mentally and spiritually depleted, just surviving each day, and sure that this was to be my permanent state,” she wrote on her website.
|
|
Then she found her current house, which needed repair but had a pond. She began to fix up the house and the land. Working outside gave her a sense of well-being, so she began to study plant medicine and create new art work. Later, she became a Reiki master and began working with the Tarot. “I found in each of these practices a unique connection to the wider world, an expansion of intuition, and a new path to healing,” she said.

Yen Ospina’s Mystical Colors
by CAP Board member Judith Pratt
The Women's Opportunity Center received a CAP Artist in Community grant for a mural, painted by Yen Ospina.
I had just looked at page one on Yen Ospina's website that shows her fascinating art, and I already wanted to own "Aqua”, her “Mariposas”, her “Escarabajo”, and her “Bosqcue Oscuro.”
Ospina writes: “I will create almost anything! Portraits, Family Portraits, Animal Portraits, Icons, Posters, Album Art, Logos, and more!”
Ospina describes her painting style much better than I can: “My work centers on themes of power, mysticism, and visibility. I use a core color palette of ochre, chocolate, cinnamon red, earthy orange, and a deep dusty teal.”
Ospina is the daughter of Colombian-born immigrants, and a “proud latinx queer artist.” She is self-taught, honing her style over “a period of deep introspection."
|
|
Then she created a mural, “Justia,” for OAR (Opportunities, Alternatives, and Resources for incarcerated people.)
Of that mural, Ospina wrote, “We need to keep fighting because there’s so much happening right now - people being murdered in the streets, kids in cages, Colombia... This mural is a reminder to myself & others that art can be powerful. I didn’t get political until painting this mural. Now I’m inspired. I hope everyone feels it when they see it. Keep fighting.”
|
|
“I care about people that are targeted with injustice,” said Ospina. “I care about the treatment of women and people of color, and I want equality for all. I find it important to give because it is the right thing to do. Being united and supporting each other is what helps to fight against the people that are constantly making us turn on each other.”
While she paints, Ospina said, “I listen to the monologues of movies. I replay movies over and over again! All-time Favorites : Blade Runner, Alien, and The Big Lebowski.”
I'm thankful that CAP exists, said Ospina. “It has given me the opportunity to network, and in the past, I have received grants that have helped me through some rough times. It has helped me when I lost my job during the pandemic. CAP helps artists in need, and I'm thankful for it.

|
“The arts have been used to express what is constantly going on in the world. Creating something out of nothing is the most fulfilling thing to me. When I try to explain what arts mean to me, the thought is too overwhelming. Words can't describe how it makes me feel, I just express it the best I can with color.”
