MHA Response to Thousand Oaks Shooting

By: Paul Gionfriddo, president and CEO
"This morning, we were awakened to the horror of yet another mass shooting - this time at a nightclub in southern California. It is hard to ignore the shock of such news, and impossible at this early stage to determine the motive of the 28-year-old shooter.
What we do know is this. The families of the 12 who died and the hundreds who survived will be affected by this event for the rest of their lives. Long after the physical wounds have healed, the trauma will remain. It is critically important that we recognize and understand this and do all that we can to offer the help and support that these individuals, families, and loved ones need.
We will never know if this tragedy could have been prevented if the killer had received appropriate mental health treatment. But we do know that too often in this country, we wait until Stage 4 to address mental illness. Many people who need treatment for a variety of mental illnesses, including PTSD, cannot get it due to lack of access and affordability - and policymakers force too many to wait until a crisis stage before asking for help...

Your Mental Health This Holiday Season

The holiday season is a busy time for most. There is so much to do, attend and plan, which can bring up feelings of being overwhelmed, anxious, stressed, and depressed.  Sometimes, these feelings are triggered by a specific event or life experience. There are many things happening around the holidays that can act as triggers. Many people's benefit plans run January to December. It could be beneficial to check into your plan before the end of the year so you can use sessions before they expire.

President Signed Federal Opioid Package into Law

President Trump signed into law H.R. 6, the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act, a large, bipartisan bill to address the opioid crisis. The National Council applauds Congress for its commitment to making access to evidence-based addiction treatment a reality for the millions of Americans our members serve that are affected by opioid addiction.

This bill makes many advances in extending addiction treatment through pilot programs in Medicaid and Medicare, makes medication assisted treatment more available, addresses workforce shortages and enables broader use of telehealth to treat these important conditions. The National Council looks forward to working with Congress and the Administration to build on these successes by making these investments permanent and by expanding access to community-based treatment through the expansion of the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic program.

Rest, Relaxation and Exercise

It can be hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle in the hustle and bustle world that we live in. If you are in school, commuting to work and/or taking care of your family, time can seem to evaporate. Taking good care of your body and mind can make a different in how healthy you are in general and how well you cope with change. Exercising, relaxing and getting enough rest will help you do better and enjoy life more. Taking good care of yourself may require a little extra time and effort, but it's worth it.
