Thoughts with Mr. Watts
“I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.” - Booker T. Washington
Twenty-nine years ago today, I walked off of a bus, stood on a set of yellow footprints, and started my United States Marine Corps Recruit Training at Paris Island, SC. It was one of the many challenges and milestones in my life. We all have those obstacles we need to overcome and it should be a reminder that the journey is judged on how far we have come in our lives and not a final destination.

The first week of February is always a special time for me personally. Yesterday was also the 20 year mark for my mother of becoming sober and free from alcohol addiction. God works in wonderful ways and he was able to help her defeat one demon to prepare her to fight Breast Cancer a year later. She has recovered from both and it's another lesson that God will not give you anything you both can't handle together.

As we prayed a decade of the rosary today for our country, I wanted to bring together the ideas and values we can all rally together around. The month of February starts with Catholic Schools week, celebrates Black History in our country, and finishes with the beginning of Lent. As we pray for healing, unity, and solidarity in our country, we must understand that what makes us all different in our community and country, is much less significant than what unites us in Christ and as Americans. They are not one in the same, but share the same values. Let us show empathy to the challenges we all face with compassion and grace.
If there is no struggle, there is no progress. - Frederick Douglas
"I hope you're proud of yourself for the times you've said "yes," when all it meant was extra work for you and was seemingly helpful only to someone else." - Fred Rogers
Who's on my socks? Well, my plan didn't go as planned. Most of our students did not know who Mr. Rogers was, at least by looking at his picture on my socks. However, it did give me a chance to talk about him with some of our students. He was my hero when I was 5 and then became my hero again after I turned 45. The world needs more Mr. Rogers.
"In times of stress, the best thing we can do for each other is to listen with our ears and our hearts and to be assured that our questions are just as important as our answers." - Fred Rogers
