Pilot Middle School Block Schedule- Begins this February
Over the next few weeks, Middle School faculty will begin frontloading pilot block schedules with students. Please see the Middle School block schedule below for applicable grade level(s) that will be followed in February. Block pilot days will take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Each student will fill their schedule template out and take home on January 28 via Tuesday folder. Thank you for your partnership as we evaluate this pilot program. 
Early Dismissal
Tomorrow,  Wednesday, January 22 is early dismissal. Pre-K and Kindergarten students are dismissed at 2:15 p.m., 1st - 5th graders are dismissed at 2:30 p.m., and Middle School is dismissed at 2:45 p.m.. We have early dismissal once a month, typically on the last Wednesday of the month, to allow time for monthly faculty meetings. Typically on these days, students may wear school appropriate blue jeans and a StJPII spirit t-shirt or school sponsored t-shirt. Please refer to the  Parent/Student Handbook for more guidelines. All early dismissal dates are posted on the school online calendar .

Calling all StJPII Dads- Volunteers Needed- Parkway Plaza
As we look forward to the new growth of Spring, we anticipate that some tree limbs will need to be cut or trimmed off of the oaks that line Parkway Plaza. We are looking to the Dads in our community to help with this effort! Please contact Mrs. Bogard if you have some time/talent to dedicate to this project. We are looking for a team of dads who would be willing to help get the job done on a weekend in the near future. Please email rbogard@jp2.org or more information. 

Counselors' Corner
Nationally Acclaimed Speaker, Brooks Gibbs to visit StJPII
StJPII is SO excited to share that we have booked nationally acclaimed speaker, Brooks Gibbs to present to our parents (February 25 at 6:30 p.m.) and to our students (February 26). Mr. Gibbs is a social skills educator and focuses on strategies for resolving conflict as well as on emotional resilience. He has presented at 2500+ school assemblies and offers games as well as training videos for parents & teachers looking for support in these areas. We hope you check out what he does so we can have a great turn out when he comes! Here is a sample video ... the intro is a little slow but once you see Mr. Gibbs, you'll know he is worth the wait.

The following students represented St. John Paul II in the “Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Student Art Contest” held this past Monday on January 13 at N.R.G. Center. This is the most esteemed and largest student art contest in our region. Mrs. Stieber is very proud of our Middle School Students and the many extra hours they invested in morning/lunch/and after school studio art time to achieve their goals. 

*Ribbon Status is as follows:
Turquoise – Finalist: Above 1st place blue- these students were a part of the group from which the top contest winners of "Champion and Gold Medal” are selected! Blue – First Place, Red – Second Place, White – Third Place.

Note: This year our Middle School Students achieved the most “Finalist Ribbons” ever for StJPII in their grade grouping.

The Final Judging results are as follows and by ranking:
  • 8th Grade - Finalist: Keenan Senico-Sims, Sarah David, Jackson Forkner, Lyndsey Gomez, Ana Paulina Munoz-Ledo

International Festival
Join Us During Catholic Schools Week: Be not afraid... to celebrate our community at the International Festival THIS FRIDAY!!!
The International Festival is coming up and we are so excited to see everyone there! Everyone from the StJPII community is welcome to this free and educational event. Don’t miss out on the prizes, food samples, scavenger hunt and activities for the whole family. There will also be performances all evening, so you won’t want to miss it!

We can’t wait to see you and your family on Friday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the BAC (gym) – everyone is welcome!

Father/Daughter Dance
All StJPII dads and current StJPII daughters from PreK – 8 th grade are invited to a Night in the Enchanted Garden Father Daughter Dance on February 8 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. An uncle or another leading male can attend with the StJPII student. There will be keepsake photos, snacks, a DJ, and many opportunities to create memories not only with your dad or daughter, but with the StJPII community.

Steps for Students
Students and families are invited to the Archdiocese's Steps for Students 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, February 15 next to the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in downtown Houston. Steps for Students a fun community event supporting Catholic education, and also offers an easy, virtual tool for you to collect pledges and raise money for StJPII. To participate, simply visit steps4students.org but it is VERY IMPORTANT that you designate StJPII as your school of choice for the funds to be allocated properly. After registering, participants will create personalized fundraising websites that can easily be forwarded to friends and family asking for their support. Don't delay, registration is now open. Thank you in advance for supporting StJPII!

Save the Date: Engineering Week February 16-28
Mark your calendars! Ms. Resweber is looking for parents or community members who are practicing engineers to present brief talks and activities to her students! She's extended Engineers' Week at our school to TWO weeks so that all of the elementary classes and her three middle school elective classes can have speakers and activities. Crawfish Boil - Save the Date- April 3, 2020
Plans are already underway for our 6th Annual Saints @ Sunset Crawfish Boil! Mark your calendars for the evening of  Friday, April 3, here on campus. We had over 800 people attend last year, and it will be even bigger and better in 2020!

We are also looking for corporate sponsors!  If your business is interested in helping sponsor the event and receiving advertising and promotion opportunities, please contact Communications and Events Officer, Kaela Lewis. Box Tops for Education Contest - Starting Soon!
If you haven’t already, please download the Box Tops for Education app and start scanning your grocery receipts today. The PTO will still take the original (unexpired) box tops so keep clipping and collecting them.
Our next Box Tops contest will run January 31 - February 14.

Some friendly contest reminders:
  • Have your child bring in those neatly cut out Box Tops and give them to their homeroom teacher. Please make sure the bag or envelope is labeled with your child's name and House or Tuesday shirt color (to assure their House gets credit for the contest).
  • When submitting Box Tops digital credit screen shots please send it in with your youngest child ONLY. ONE screen shot per StJPII Family please. List each child's name and House or Tuesday shirt color and how you want the credit divided. Example: Jane Smith/House of Luke - $3.75 Jack Smith/House of John $3.75 or Jane Smith/Green - $3.75 Jack Smith/Blue - $3.75

DARR Skate Party- February 13
Save the date for the next DARR Skate Party on Thursday, February 13. 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. The party will be Neon Themed, entrance $7 and skate rental $3. Please come out and have some fun!!

The PTO needs help with snacks for our teachers on tomorrow, January 22 for the Faculty Meeting and First Friday Lunch on February 7. Please see links below to sign up. Note there is a special sign-up section for the non-food items for First Friday Lunch!
If you want to volunteer and don’t have the time; First Friday Lunch is a great opportunity to get involve. It is very simple and will make a big difference. We have a new section NO TIME TO COOK? Elementary School
WHCSA Elementary Basketball season is here! The kids had an awesome first week! Don't forget to upload your photos below!
Middle School
Basketball is coming to the end of the season! We have this week left and then playoffs will start so please look at the Athletic Calendar for game days and times! Spring sports tryout schedule is as follows:
*Girls Lacrosse tryouts will be held on Saturday, January 25 at school on the athletic field from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. You need to have a Girls Lacrosse stick, goggles, and a mouthpiece. 

*Varsity Baseball and Softball tryouts will be held at Memorial Ashford Little League fields on Thursday, January 30 & Friday, January 31 from 4:00 p.m.-5:30 pm. Baseball will be on the Senior Field and Softball will be on Field 4. 

*Boys Lacrosse tryouts will be held on Saturday, Feb 1 at school on the athletic field from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. You will need to have a Boys Lacrosse stick and helmet. No pads are needed for tryouts. 

*T&F will start on Monday, February 3, with practices on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. all at school on the athletic field. Practices will continue through the season up until April 23. Meets are already listed on the Athletic Calendar but may be subject to change. Parent meeting will be held on Thursday Feb 6 at 5:30 p.m. in the GSC and we ask you to make every effort to attend. 

Remember you must have a physical on file with Mrs. Aertker, and please bring your own equipment to tryouts.
