The Wild Side:
Litter and Wildlife

Balloons Found in Parking Lot

Did you know that hundreds of thousands of animals are injured or killed every year from litter? Carelessly disposed of items like balloons, cigarette butts, and plastic bags can be mistaken for food items by wildlife. Animals can get their head or body stuck in food containers or plastic six pack rings.

Balloons and monofilament fishing line can be especially hazardous to wildlife. Animals can become entangled in the fishing line or ribbons that are attached to balloons. Once entangled, it is nearly impossible for them to break free or untangle themselves from it. Colorful pieces of broken balloon fragments may resemble berries to an unsuspecting bird or turtle.

Each spring and fall Lake Crabtree offers an opportunity to help our local wildlife by cleaning up litter around the shores of the lake. Why not join us in keeping Lake Crabtree a safe place for wildlife, by participating in our Spring Big Sweep event on Saturday, April 4, from 9:00 a.m.-noon. Visit our website to register online.
