ANAC joins Nursing Nominations Coalition
ANAC has joined the Nursing Nominations Coalition, a group dedicated to identifying and supporting the nominations of qualified nurses to federal advisory boards, task forces, administration positions and other key positions. Biden appoints nurse practitioner Rear Admiral Susan Orsega as acting surgeon general
The Biden administration has selected Rear Admiral Susan Orsega, MSN, FNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN to serve as the nation’s acting surgeon general. She will serve as acting surgeon general as Dr. Vivek Murthy awaits Senate confirmation. She is currently Director of Commissioned Corps Headquarters at HHS, responsible for approximately 6,100 members of the U.S. Public Health Service. Previous nurse surgeon generals have included Sylvia Trent-Adams and Richard Henry Carmona.

As COVID-19 continues to ravage the country, the toll on nurses’ mental well-being is undeniable and debilitating. The American Nurses Association (ANA) is offering a series of free on-demand webinars for nurses. This brand new offering provides important tools that all nurses can use to help maintain mental well-being while facing the ongoing challenges presented by caring for COVID-19 patients.

HRSA releases Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program AETC annual data report
 HRSA HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB)'s Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program AIDS Education and Training Centers (AETC) Program Annual Data Report for 2019 is now available on the HAB website. There are also many other interesting reports on various aspects of the Ryan White program on this site, including information on special populations, ADAP and downloadable slide decks you may find useful.  
Massachusetts passes legislation granting Full Practice Authority for nurse practitioners
On Jan. 1, Massachusetts became the 23rd state in the nation to pass legislation granting full practice authority for nurse practitioners. Click here for more information on the benefits of full practice authority.
Biden issues several executive orders
Since taking office, President Biden has signed 19 executive orders on a range of issues that include COVID-19, immigration, climate change, sexual and gender identity and racial disparities. For a summary and more information on these orders, visit the Federal Register website.

NBNA hosts webinar on HIV risk in Black communities
ANAC members Sheldon Fields and Dorcas Baker will present an important webinar, Understanding and Addressing HIV Risk in Black Communities, on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. ET. This webinar is hosted by the National Black Nurses Association. Click here to register and for more information.
FDA approves first injectable regimen for HIV treatment in adults
On Jan. 21, the FDA approved Cabenuva (cabotegravir and rilpivirine, injectable formulation) as a complete regimen for the treatment of HIV in adults. This regimen is to be administered once a month to replace a current antiretroviral oral regimen in those who have sustained viral suppression. This is the first FDA-approved injectable.
2021 Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program applications open through Feb. 25
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has opened the 2021 Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program (LRP) application cycle through Feb. 25. This year, Nurse Corps LRP has set aside special funding for nurses and nurse faculty who specialize in women’s and behavioral health. In exchange for service, you may be eligible for up to 90% of student loan debt repaid. Research
Sigma Theta Tau/ANAC grant application open through April 1
Sigma Theta Tau International and ANAC are currently seeking applications for a $2,500 Research Grant to encourage research career development of nurses through support of clinically oriented HIV/AIDS research and to increase the number of HIV studies being done by nurses. IAS 2021 abstract submissions open through Feb. 10
Abstract submissions for IAS 2021, the 11th IAS Conference on HIV Science, are now open and will close on Feb. 10. This virtual conference will be held July 18-21. Consider submissions addressing cutting-edge HIV science, clinical innovation and global pandemic responses. 
US rejoins WHO and Biden names Fauci head of US delegation
On Jan. 20, President Biden retracted a decision by the Trump administration to withdraw from the World Health Organization and announced that Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, would be the head of the U.S. delegation to the agency’s executive board. This is a critical element in a coordinated response to the COVID-19 pandemic, bilateral vaccine development and distributions and other global health crisis such as HIV/AIDS.
WHO recommends dapivirine vaginal ring as a new choice for HIV prevention for women at substantial risk of HIV infection
On Jan. 26, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that the dapivirine vaginal ring (DPV-VR) may be offered as an additional prevention choice for women at substantial risk of HIV infection as part of comprehensive prevention services, ensuring women are offered full information about their HIV prevention choices. Comprehensive services include STI diagnosis and treatment, the offer of voluntary partner services, HIV testing and links to ART for all women who test positive, a range of contraception options and healthcare worker training.

University of Rochester School of Nursing names Mitchell Wharton Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion
ANAC member and board of directors treasurer, Mitchell Wharton, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, CNS has been named Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion at the University of Rochester School of Nursing, effective Feb. 1. As Associate Dean, Wharton will join the UR nursing senior leadership team, where he will work to more fully integrate issues of diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the school. He has served as past-chair of ANAC's diversity, engagement and inclusion (DEI) committee and has been a mentor to two of ANAC's DEI scholarship recipients. 
ANAC member Anthony Valesco publishes commentary on vaccine distribution
The important perspectives of nursing in health issues can be amplified by local newspapers and newscasts. ANAC Member Anthony Valesco, MS, APRN, ACRN recently had a commentary published in the Palm Springs, California local paper Desert Sun entitled Voice: Nurses can help get vaccines in arms and out of freezers in Riverside County.
