HRSA HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB)'s Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program AIDS Education and Training Centers (AETC) Program Annual Data Report for 2019 is now available on the HAB website. On Jan. 21, the FDA approved Cabenuva (cabotegravir and rilpivirine, injectable formulation) as a complete regimen for the treatment of HIV in adults. This regimen is to be administered once a month to replace a current antiretroviral oral regimen in those who have sustained viral suppression. This is the first FDA-approved injectable.

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has opened the 2021 Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program (LRP) application cycle through Feb. 25. This year, Nurse Corps LRP has set aside special funding for nurses and nurse faculty who specialize in women’s and behavioral health. In exchange for service, you may be eligible for up to 90% of student loan debt repaid. Sigma Theta Tau International and ANAC are currently seeking applications for a $2,500 Research Grant to encourage research career development of nurses through support of clinically oriented HIV/AIDS research and to increase the number of HIV studies being done by nurses. Abstract submissions for IAS 2021, the 11th IAS Conference on HIV Science, are now open and will close on Feb. 10. This virtual conference will be held July 18-21. Consider submissions addressing cutting-edge HIV science, clinical innovation and global pandemic responses. 

On Jan. 20, President Biden retracted a decision by the Trump administration to withdraw from the World Health Organization and announced that Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, would be the head of the U.S. delegation to the agency’s executive board. This is a critical element in a coordinated response to the COVID-19 pandemic, bilateral vaccine development and distributions and other global health crisis such as HIV/AIDS.

On Jan. 26, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that the dapivirine vaginal ring (DPV-VR) may be offered as an additional prevention choice for women at substantial risk of HIV infection as part of comprehensive prevention services, ensuring women are offered full information about their HIV prevention choices. Comprehensive services include STI diagnosis and treatment, the offer of voluntary partner services, HIV testing and links to ART for all women who test positive, a range of contraception options and healthcare worker training.

ANAC member and board of directors treasurer, Mitchell Wharton, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, CNS has been named Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion at the University of Rochester School of Nursing, effective Feb. 1. As Associate Dean, Wharton will join the UR nursing senior leadership team, where he will work to more fully integrate issues of diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the school. He has served as past-chair of ANAC's diversity, engagement and inclusion (DEI) committee and has been a mentor to two of ANAC's DEI scholarship recipients. 

The important perspectives of nursing in health issues can be amplified by local newspapers and newscasts. ANAC Member Anthony Valesco, MS, APRN, ACRN recently had a commentary published in the Palm Springs, California local paper Desert Sun entitled Voice: Nurses can help get vaccines in arms and out of freezers in Riverside County.
