Distance learning update:
Instructional leaders, principals, and teachers continue to work together to transition to our distance learning plan. As the District prepares for its "soft roll out" on Monday, March 30 - the week teachers and students take beginning steps working/interacting together through the on-line platform - here is some additional information to help our community prepare:
Grading: No student assignments during the week of March 30 will be graded.
Student tech support hours: Tech support will be available for students and families beginning on Monday, March 30, from 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Please contact the Service Desk at (916) 294-9005 x103200 if you are having difficulty connecting to wifi, cannot access learning resources, or are having technical difficulties with District provided Chromebooks.
Teacher tech support: Teachers will continue to request technology support from ETIS through the Happy Fox work order system. Login at https://www.fcusd.org/ETISwo to submit your support ticket. ETIS is closely monitoring work orders during regular work hours to provide you with a prompt response.
When will students be able to access Schoology? Information on how to log into Schoology, the distance learning platform for FCUSD, will be shared on Saturday via our usual communication channels (i.e. Blackboard Connect, social media, etc.)
Will parents have access to Schoology? Parents will have access to Schoology to monitor their child's progress and assignments. More information regarding how to access your unique Parent Access Code will be available in the Saturday message distributed via our usual communication channels (i.e. Blackboard, social media, etc.)

Meals for students in need: More resources for families
The District will continue its daily "grab and go" meal distribution Friday, as well as each day next week (March 30-April 3). Locations and times can be found here. Here are additional updates:
Meal pickup: The USDA has waived the requirement that a student be present during meal distribution.
Spring Break: The District will provide meals for families to support them through our Spring Break (April 6-10). The entire weeks' worth meals will be available for pickup on Friday, April 3.
Weekend meals reminder: Community partners are offering additional meals to help students during the weekends. Starting Friday, March 27, local nonprofit Blessings in a Backpack will be distributing weekend meal packages to help students in need at the Cordova Community Food Locker, during their regular hours.
- Cordova Community Food Locker, 10497 Coloma Road in Rancho Cordova
- Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
- Each bag is packed with single-serve items for one child that includes two breakfasts, three to four lunches/dinners, and two snacks.
|
Reminder: Board of Education meeting tonight will be live-streamed only
The Governor's stay-at-home executive order cancelling large gatherings also allows local legislative bodies to hold meetings via conference calls while still satisfying state transparency requirements.
- To watch: Tonight's Board of Education meeting will be available through live-stream on the District's YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/folsomcordova) beginning at 6 p.m.
- To comment: Use this Google document to submit a question or comment to the Board: https://bit.ly/FCUSDcomment

Today's Mindful Moment: Grief
-From Dr. Channa Cook-Harvey, Director of Social-Emotional Learning, [email protected]
This morning I cried. Locked myself in the bathroom and had a nice, long, self-pity-filled, ugly cry. It felt amazing. It occurred to me that since we made the decision to close schools on the afternoon of March 13, I haven't given myself permission to feel much; instead, I've busied myself focusing on my kids' wellbeing and brainstorming with colleagues about how to support others and trying figure out what work needs to get done and how to do so virtually. This morning though, I let all the emotions out. As the "release valve" opened, I found myself also feeling a sense of anger. Angry about how helpless I feel, angry about how vulnerable so many people are right now (including one of my sons), angry for the families that have already lost a loved one.
Yesterday, one of our District mental health specialists, Joanna Knight, sent me a kind text message and a link to an article that she had read from the Harvard Business Review entitled: That Discomfort You're Feeling is Grief. So, after my cry, I sat down and read the article. Twice. Author Scott Berinato explains that the stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, sadness, acceptance, and meaning) are not linear and that we may experience all of these at different times as we come to grips with our new (hopefully temporary) normal. He offers some strategies that I will refer to frequently over the coming weeks:
- Find balance in the things you're thinking.
- Come into the present.
- Let go of what you can't control.
- Stock up on compassion.
It was comforting for me to know that I'm not alone, and that whatever emotion I'm feeling in the moment is okay.
Thank you for letting me share so candidly with you all today; I hope that my openness brings you some reassurance as well. And if you're feeling like I am today, "let yourself feel the grief and keep going."
