had a great weekend at NY20, the
New York Podiatric Clinical Conference
in late January. Thanks to the New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA), a Pre-Med Advisor Event held on Friday January 24 was attended by over 10 advisors for top colleges across the Northeast, including Johns Hopkins U., George Washington U., and Howard University. Mark Kosinski
was a pre-med student at NYU, foot problems took him to a podiatrist. The podiatrist impressed him; here was a specialty that encompassed other specialties. Dermatology, neurology, surgery, orthopedics – all while still being a specialist of the foot. He decided to pursue podiatry as his career path.

Dr. Edward C. Halperin Lectures at NYCPM
On February 12, Edward C. Halperin, MD, MA, an oncologist, lectured to the NYCPM community with a presentation entitled “Classic Carcinogenesis for Students of Podiatric Medicine.” Dr. Halperin is Chancellor and CEO of New York Medical College; he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Science,

at the 2017 NYCPM commencement.

2020 NYCPM Blood Drive Will Save Lives
On February 3
rd
, 20 donations were collected during the 2020 NYCPM Blood Drive. According to Elaine Peralta, Account Manager at the New York Blood Center, those 20 whole blood donations would help save the lives of approximately 60 hospital patients (once the donations are divided into the blood’s different components). The
2020 Blood Drive Coordinators, Cheyenne Raimondi and Malika Reddy (both 2022), introduced the 2021 Coordinators, Elisaul Diaz (2024) and Kayla Neville (2023)

Karla De La Mata Receives Michael L. Stone Award
Karla De La Mata (2020)
was presented with this year’s
Michael L. Stone Outstanding Professional Conduct Award, presented by American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) in a ceremony in San Antonio, Texas. As reported in the November-December 2019

, one student from each of the nine schools of podiatric medicine receives the award annually; the honor includes a plaque and a cash award.

Canadian PM Students Honored for Completion of Studies
On February 25, five senior podiatric medical students from the Université du Québec à Trois Rivières (UQTR) in Canada attended a luncheon in their honor, celebrating the completion of their eight-week rotation at NYCPM. In addition, three students from the University of Ireland Galway, who were just starting their week at NYCPM, attended as well.

Michael J. Trepal, VP of Academic Affairs and Dean
, noted the similarity of the programs at the two universities. The Canadian students each received certificates from NYCPM.

The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) announces its 34
th
Annual Student Writing Competition:

All papers must be non-technical in nature. Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.

There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.
·
First prize, $1,000; second prize,
$750;
third prize,
$500;
sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin. Recognition in the
APMA NEWS
and the
APMWA Newsletter
. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.

Alumnus Obituary
Dr. Howard Joseph (Class of 1950)
Howard Joseph, DPM
(’50), age 94, died Jan. 25, 2020, at his home in Oneonta, NY, following a brief illness. He was a practicing podiatrist and served in the Army in World War II.
