Statements & Articles Released by Religious Leaders
Concerning Abortion & the US Supreme Court's Decision
in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization
A core tenet embedded in the San Francisco Interfaith Council's (SFIC) mission statement is to build understanding. To this end, when controversial and divisive issues emerge, the SFIC seeks to sensitize and inform our greater interfaith community to the diverse perspectives being voiced by our constituent communities of faith and religious institutions.
Chronologically, from the most recent, the SFIC has harvested and disseminated statements issued in response to Vladimir Putin's Invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing humanitarian crisis, the killing of George Floyd, the separating of immigrant families at the border, the 2016 presidential election, and the massacre at the PULSE nightclub in Orlando. Those statements, which are linked to the SFIC's FaceBook page and Twitter feeds, are distributed to the Council's 5,600 e-subscribers and targeted lists. The collection of those statements is archived on the SFIC's website and may be found by clicking the following link:
Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, No. 19-1392, 597 U.S. ___ (2022), is a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the court held that the Constitution of the United States does not confer a right to abortion, and overruled both Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992) (wikipedia). This ruling has elicited a broad range of important responses, not the least being from religious leaders. Since the ruling, the SFIC has diligently harvested and invited religious leaders to submit their respective statements to be shared in the spirit of building understanding. The following are links to those statements:
