National Recovery Month Is Around The Corner - Prepare With The Official Toolkit

September is National Recovery Month - a chance to celebrate individuals in recovery and raise awareness of substance use disorders. Although it isn't here yet, you can get ready for the 29th Annual Recovery Month with a free toolkit of media templates, event planning tips and PSAs from SAMHSA. This year's theme is "Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community."

September is National Suicide Prevention Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month-a time to share resources and  stories  in an effort to shed light on this highly taboo and stigmatized topic. We use this month to reach out to those affected by suicide, raise awareness and connect individuals with suicidal ideation to treatment services. It is also important to ensure that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention.

Gov. Ducey Holds Ceremonial Signing For Bill Expanding PTSD Treatment For First Responders

Last month, Governor Doug Ducey was joined by the family of Phoenix Police Officer Craig Tiger for a ceremonial bill signing of H.B. 2502, also known as the "Officer Craig Tiger Act." This bill increases the number of counseling sessions that must be covered if a licensed mental health professional determines that further counseling will help a first responder after experiencing a traumatic event on the job.

National Suicide Hotline Improvement Act

On August 14th, the National Suicide Hotline Improvement Act (H.R. 2345) was signed into law by President Trump. Considerable thanks go to Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Joe Donnelly (D-IN), along with Representatives Chris Stewart (R-UT) and Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) who were the key sponsors of this legislation in both houses of Congress.

The legislation directs the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), in conjunction with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Department of Veterans Affairs, to study the current effectiveness of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and determine the feasibility of utilizing a three-digit phone number for a national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline system.

2018 Voter Guide

PAFCO has put together a Voter Guide in an effort to better explain and educate voters on what role the different parts of government play.

Emerging Drug Trends Report

The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation has released their  Emerging Drug Trends  report, and with it some surprising findings. Traditional wisdom holds that socioeconomic status is an influencer of the likelihood of developing a substance use disorder (SUD) in youth, with disadvantaged populations experiencing higher rates of SUDs. This new report challenges that wisdom with findings that rates of SUD are less affected by socioeconomic status, and more affected by a child's environment. This data demonstrates that robust prevention and parenting resources are needed in every community.

It's Time to Talk Openly About Depression in the Workplace

It's time to talk openly about depression in the workplace. The Right Direction is an educational initiative created to raise awareness about depression in the workplace, promote early recognition of symptoms and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.

P ositive Parenting Prevents Drug Abuse

Families strive to find the best ways to raise their children to live happy, healthy, and productive lives.  Parents are often concerned about whether their children will start or are already using drugs such as tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and others, including the abuse of prescription drugs.  Research supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has shown the important role that parents play in preventing their children from starting to use drugs.

"As a newer resident to Arizona, The Arizona Institute for Healthcare Leadership program gave me the opportunity to meet peers from across the state and have a better understanding of healthcare challenges. The coaching with Joanne was invaluable for me to step away from the day to day and gain perspective. I enjoyed learning new leadership techniques to use with teams. This program helped me understand emotional intelligence and how to interact better with others knowing my strengths and weaknesses. I feel this program is a valuable tool for any healthcare leader wishing to advance his/her career or just become a better leader."
Vice President-Chief Information Officer

"This Arizona Institute for Healthcare Leadership training becomes a transformational experience for attendees. You can leverage this experience to: network with talented individuals across the Healthcare continuum, synthesize new ideas for your ongoing role, develop your personal brand in transition to your next promotion, and get coaching that will help you reach to your potential. This course is excellent, and a career builder for participants."
Former CEO, Healthcare Consultant

"Over the past several months, I have had the opportunity to learn new leadership techniques that help our organization answer Arizona's call for better healthcare delivery. Our health center has utilized leadership concepts and methods shared by AIHL within our departments to provide our patients/clients with stellar service and quality care. AIHL has provided me with tools, resources, materials, and a peer network that I can draw upon to assist with my day-to-day management and personal/staff development. I would highly recommend AIHL to leaders looking to enhance their emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and communication skills to help create an efficient and collaborative organizational culture..."
