A Message from Your
AMTA-KY Chapter President
Hello AMTA-KY Chapter!

A HUGE thank you goes out to all of the volunteers we have had this year. We have had  board volunteers step away and former board members step back into volunteer roles. Thank you for your service!

AMTA chapters have 3 deliverables to national...
*One face to face meeting with membership (can be as simple as meeting in a coffee shop)
*3 communications with membership (could be as simple as a letter from your president)
*responding to communication within 3 business days

AMTA-KY has always been proud of being the best when it comes to education and volunteers. We go way above and beyond what is necessary and expected from our national headquarters. AMTA does not require us to do 3 day education conferences, post-convention classes, summer education, or fall education. All of those events are approved by national but it is the blood, sweat, and tears of dedicated volunteers in Kentucky who believe that hands-on classes are necessary in a hands on career like massage therapy. We start WAY ahead of time. We plan, communicate, plan some more, juggle all of the pieces and parts, and pray that all of the paperwork is complete and on time. We keep up with CE information, deal with the talent, and answer all sorts of questions...all. sorts. of questions.

OH, AND we do it while working as therapists, feeding the family, wrangling kids, and trying to keep our lives in (some sort of) order. WHEW!

The future of these events may be dimming. Volunteers are needed to do more than an afternoon event. We need volunteers that: have drive, are teachable, will communicate, will work well with a deadline, and will complete tasks assigned to them. Your AMTA-KY board works hard for YOUR gain. We aren't paid but the adventures are kinda epic.

What will happen when there is no big education event? Will you go online? Visit the nearest school for CEs? Will you have to travel outside the state for hands-on education?

Attendance is declining. You may believe that if you miss this year you'll make it next year. I hope you are right. I hope that next year's board will have the time, energy, and dedication to put on 3 education events. Spring 2018 is already being planned...but what about summer and fall?

My hope is that you see this as a challenge to rise up and take part. Read the call to candidacy and spend some time thinking about whether or not you would like your membership to mean something to you.

Volunteering has been one of the best challenges of my life. I have learned much about AMTA but I have also learned about myself. I hope you take some time to think about what you could offer the AMTA-KY chapter.

Valerie

Don't forget... I need you, AMTA-KY needs you, and YOU need AMTA-KY.
Hug your families, call your friends, be a community, keep in touch!
Talk soon,
Val

Meet your New Board Members
Caren McCarty - Secretary
Communication Chair and Webmaster

One thing that can be said about Caren is that she loves AMTA, but more specficially, our KY Chapter.  When she was asked in 2006 by Katherine Warner to be on the Printing Committee, little did she know she would catch the fever...that same year, she attended CVOP (Chapter Volunteer Orientation Program) and the rest is history. Caren has been our Chapter Webmaster since 2006 taking two short breaks for family circumstances. She has also held the offices of 2nd and 3rd Vice Presidents as well as our Volunteer Cooridnator, Communication Chair, CE Coordiantor, Nominating Committee Chair and Standing Rules Committee Chair. She loves organizing and really enjoys putting the final touches on the colors and fonts of the Newsletter whenever asked. Currently, she is working with Collette Wilson on our 2018 Spring Conference.

Caren has been a Massage Therapist for 14 years graduating from Lexington Healing Arts Academy in Dec. 2003.  She is married to Kenny and is the Mother of Two and Step Mother of Two.

The Latest News from KBLMT

Here are the 3 important things for licensees to know:
1) License renewals are now done online BUT the board still has the responsibility to review and approve them.  Therefore, it still takes 30 days to get renewed IF you turn in everything correctly.  Please log in to your online account 60 days ahead of your renewal to make sure you have everything needed for the online form:
·         a passport quality photo that you have saved to your computer so that you can attach it to the online form.  THE FOLLOWING ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE AND WILL DELAY YOUR APPROVAL: a photo of your drivers license, a photo that includes anything other than your upper shoulders and head, a photo of you with a hat or sunglasses or looking away from the camera.  For further definition of "passport quality photograph" please google that phrase.
·         your CE completion certificates scanned into your computer or saved from an email attachment.  The certificates must show provider name, contact info, provider number, name of the course, date of the course, number of CE's and your name.  If you are counting it towards your 3 ethics credits, it must say ethics.  ALL RENEWALS NEED THIS DOCUMENTATION.
·         ability to pay the fee through the online system.
If you are utterly unable to comply electronically then please email [email protected] and request a paper application in time to have it back to her at least 30 days ahead of your renewal.
KBLMT is requiring the Applications Committee to look at every photo, application and CE entry due to the incredible upswing in the involvement of human trafficking in the massage industry.  There has also been a national increase in fraudulent credentials both in "massage schools" and in the CE industry.  By looking for signs of these issues, we can refer serious issues to law enforcement agencies.   If the board only looks at 15% of the applications, much slips through.  Nearby states are having serious problems with these issues.
2.   The Board plans a serious review of our statutes and regs over the next 3-6 months, with a goal of potentially proposing legislative changes in the Fall of 2018.  The kinds of things we are looking to improve or debate:
·         licensure or permitting of establishments may be needed
·         the number of CE's required for renewal--are we at a realistic number?  Should we require any to be "in person" or "hands on"?
·         ability to run background checks and get ongoing notification of offenses from KSP
·         fees
·         procedure and standards for Certificate of Good Standing for schools
·         changing inactive status  (see Oregon massage law, for example)
·         changing the time allowed for late renewals
·         composition of the board
·         other suggestions?
3.  The Board is required to have one member who is "an owner or director of a program of massage therapy instruction."  The current member's term expires on July 31, 2018 and she will not re-up.  Who will step forward to fill that position?
KBLMT has 4 new members.  Many thanks to Sandy Gadd and Eric Byrd for their years of service and hard work.  Their terms expired on July 31, 2017.
Richard Whitehouse was appointed in early July to fill the position of member-at-large which had been vacant for a year.  He previously lived in Ohio and served on the Ohio Medical Board as a public member.  He represented that board at the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards annual meeting, and after moving to Kentucky, he was appointed to KBLMT, serving as Kentucky's representative to the FSMTB annual meeting this year.  He lives in Louisville.
Brandy McDowell, LMT was appointed to fill the remaining 2 years of a term that was resigned last year.  She resides in Paducah.
Angel Wossum, LMT of Union KY and Michael Grise, LMT of Hopkinsville were appointed to 3-year terms. Angel instructs in the massage therapy program at Gateway Community College and is in management at an Elements Massage location.  Michael is in private practice in a clinic employing other LMT's.
These new voices are expressing fresh ideas and energy.
Thank you,
Denise M. Logsdon, MS, LMT, NCTMB

Chair, KBLMT

Do you know a member not receiving chapter emails?

Have them visit amtamassage.org and update their contact information.
If they "opt out" of all emails they won't receive anything from the chapter.
(So they need to make sure they don't pick that option.)
