Welcome back (virtually), J-School students, faculty and staff! Starting today, all classes are online for the rest of the semester. Although this is certainly not ideal, we hope to ensure this process works for everyone. For inspiration,

Events have been canceled or postponed through May 15, and all non-housing campus buildings are closed. No decision has been made yet on graduation ceremonies.
Advising:
The Journalism Advising Office is virtual, email or phone only. Students who have a scheduled advising appointment will be contacted by their advisor with information about summer and fall enrollment planning and given the option to discuss their plan over the phone. Students who had an advising hold, but had yet to schedule an appointment, will also be contacted by their advisor to review enrollment plans. Students who would like to schedule a remote appointment should contact their advisor personally.

▮Creative Break: Tune out the bad news for a few minutes and practice some mindful motivation: The JST Creative Break is a short daily challenge designed to help you cope by creating. Anyone can join! Heather will release a daily challenge each morning (M-F) beginning today. These short challenges in a variety (and often your choice) of Adobe tools will allow you to keep practicing, learning and creating. Participate whenever and however you want, share on social media (#jstcreativebreak) and post in our group Slack channel. Signing up just means you will get the daily email on the challenge. was a discussant for the Law & Policy Division at the AEJMC Southeast Colloquium, held virtually over the weekend of March 20-22 from the University of Memphis.
Doctoral student
Yuchen Liu
's Paper, "Meme(bership) Cost #JustDoIt: A Thematic Study of Internet Memes Following Nike's Colin Kaepernick Ad," was selected as ICA's Visual Communication Studies Division's Top Student Paper. The paper is coauthored with another doctoral student,
John Watson
, and will be presented at the ICA virtual conference in May. Liu also received the Doctoral Student Research Award from KU Graduate Studies and will be funded for $1,500 for her research.

Sales Strategies class visits Spencer Museum
|
On March 6, the JOUR 611: Sales Strategies class visited the Spencer Museum to experience the environment and the idea of "creativity." The class subject matter for the day was "Creativity Sells." Our guide,
Celka Straughn
, Deputy Director of Public Practice, Curatorial and Research, and the Andrew Mellon Director of Academic Programs, helped the students connect creativity in sales with art. She discussed art as a product, as innovation and consumer perceptions, preferences and creating value are all part of developing a strategic message.
The class also used the Spencer Museum Reception Room to host guest speakers

, digital advertising strategist, from Midco. They presented a case study on creativity in media sales.
