COVID-19 Project
The Lumber River Workforce Development Board received funding from NC Commerce Division of Workforce Solution to operate a COVID-19 Employment & Training Project. This project is designed to assist dislocated individuals by placement into full-time permanent employment positions through the use of On-the-Job Training (OJT) services, and employers by providing an OJT wage reimbursement incentive to hire and train these individuals. The project also provides limited temporary employment positions in partnership with local health departments to assist with COVID-19 contact tracing. To date, the program has placed five individuals in OJT and three contact tracers.
For Program Year 2020 (July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021), as of December 31, 2020, the Lumber River Council of Governments Workforce Development Board has $69,551.97 for expenditures with the COVID-19 Employment and Training Project.

Finish Line Grant (FLG)
The Lumber River Workforce Development Board (LRWDB) was approved for a third year of Finish Line Grant operations to assist community college students that are approaching program completion and are faced with financial hardship. The LRWDB has a partnership with Bladen, Richmond, Robeson, and Sandhills community colleges to provide this assistance. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, staff has persevered and continues to provide FLG assistance virtually in order to meet the students’ needs.

Biden extends the national ban on evictions through March 2021
The current order was set to expire on January 31st. Restrictions on foreclosures of properties with federally-guaranteed mortgages were also extended to March 31st. Additionally, the deadline to apply for forbearances on such mortgages is extended to March 31st.

NC Ranks 6th in Nation for Total Doses of Vaccine Administered
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ranked North Carolina the 6th state in the nation for total vaccine doses administered, a testament to a phenomenal job done by North Carolina vaccine providers.
The state was also recognized by the Washington Post as being one of only three states providing thorough reporting on vaccine administration by race. The state’s dashboard will be updated every weekday beginning next week. It is the source for the most accurate and timely information for vaccine data for the state.

New Tools Help North Carolinians Get Vaccine Information
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services released new tools to help North Carolinians get their COVID-19 vaccine questions answered and to find vaccine locations in the state.
The newly expanded COVID-19 vaccine help center can be reached at 888-675-4567 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Callers can get help with general COVID-19 vaccine questions, information on eligibility groups, clinical questions about the vaccine, how to find vaccine locations and transportation services.

In partnership with the UNC School of Government, the League of Municipalities sponsors the Lead for NC fellowship program. This opportunity places recent graduates in cities and towns across North Carolina, where they will play a pivotal role in the operations of a local government.
Lead for North Carolina is more than an internship opportunity where fellows shadow various departments or provide administrative assistance to current employees. It is our hope that the fellow will work on transformative projects within your community. Fellows should work on projects that have been on your "to-do" list for forever or the wicked problems that affect your community.

Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR) Builds New Tool for Rural Communities to Build Their Outdoor Recreation Economies
The Rural Economic Development Toolkit will provide a resource for communities building up their outdoor recreation economies. Most communities will need additional resources to implement their plans. To overcome this hurdle, ORR compiled a list of federal grants and technical assistance to accompany the toolkit, which will support these communities in securing the funding and assistance they will need to accomplish their economic goals.

North Carolina’s First Cybercrime Hotline
United Way of North Carolina and the Cybercrime Support Network (CSN) announce the launch of North Carolina’s first cybercrime support and recovery hotline. The new system allows North Carolina residents to dial 2-1-1 to report and find resources to recover from identity theft, financial fraud, cyberstalking, cyberbullying and other cybercrimes. This initiative was made possible through a Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Victim Assistance Grant that was awarded by The North Carolina Governor’s Crime Commission. Additional support for the project has been provided by the N.C. Department of Information Technology (NCDIT).

Department of Environmental Quality announces training for the Spring 2021funding application round.Funding offered this round is available through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF)and the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF). Small Business Update: Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and Stimulus Q&A
At the end of 2020, the federal government passed a $900 billion coronavirus-related stimulus bill designed to help small businesses in multiple ways. These included the reopening of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), expanding the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC), setting aside new funds for Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) grants and creating new live venue grants.

Shuttered Venue Operators Grant
Emergency assistance for eligible venues affected by the COVID pandemic.
Eligible entities include:
- Live venue operators or promoters
- Theatrical producers
- Live performing arts organization operators
- Relevant museum operators, zoos and aquariums who meet specific criteria
- Motion picture theater operators
- Talent representatives, and
- Each business entity owned by an eligible entity that also meets the eligibility requirements

US Department of Education offering Talent Search Grants
US Department of Education invites public or private agencies, institutions of higher education, and/or secondary schools to apply under the Talent Search Grant program for funding to support the identification of individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds with potential for education at the postsecondary level and encourage them to complete secondary school and undertake postsecondary education.
Applications due by February 26, 2021.
