Cooking Club
In this week’s Cooking Club, the kids made one of their favorite dishes - sushi! They learned several Japanese words, and practiced patience, precision, and manual dexterity while rolling and cutting their sushi rolls.
The kids got their hands sticky, spreading rice onto a sheet of nori (seaweed) that was laid on a bamboo sushi rolling mat. Everyone liked brushing a spicy mixture of wasabi and water onto the rice. The kids got creative, placing their choice of toppings onto the rice, including asparagus, carrot, cucumber, tomato, avocado, scallions, bell pepper, and even smoked salmon. Those feeling adventurous sprinkled on spicy togarashi (Japanese dried pepper), herbal shiso (dried Japanese basil), and funky furikake (dried seaweed & sesame seeds). After arranging all the toppings in a neat row, they tightly rolled the sushi with the mats, and then cut the rolls into neat slices.
