Custodian Appreciation Day

The Community Service Organization (CSO) respectfully invites you to take part in recognizing the people who maintain our buildings and grounds at CCA. Custodian Appreciation Day is all about acknowledging the hard work that goes into the upkeep of our campus. Extra efforts to sanitize and clean our school have been crucial in this time of uncertainty due to the pandemic, and our custodians have helped to keep us safe. The names of our dedicated custodians are Jim Moynihan, Richard Holmes, Bob Peterson, Jared Long, and Mark Madoo.
Families or students from any grade, as well as faculty, may contribute to our Custodian Appreciation Day with gift cards or cash donations that can be used to purchase gift cards. This year, Custodian Appreciation Day will be held on Wednesday, April 28. Your donations are greatly appreciated and may be given to faculty advisors or to any member of the CSO prior to April 28.

Health Update

We are pleased to report that most of Cape Cod Academy’s staff and faculty have been or are in the process of being vaccinated against COVID-19. Additionally, we were learned that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts recently announced that all residents ages 16+ are eligible for vaccinations beginning on April 19. We encourage anyone in this age group to get vaccinated.

Recently, the Commonwealth replaced the MA Travel order with a Travel Advisory. While the state has revised its recommendations, Cape Cod Academy will continue to require testing or quarantine time. This means that if you choose to travel out of state for more than 24 hours, we ask that you have your child (over the age of 10) tested within 72 hours of returning to the state or quarantine for 7 days. Students 10 and under do not need to be tested as long as the child’s parent has tested negative for COVID-19 upon reentry into the state.

Thank you for your continued efforts to keep our community safe.

-Ian Carr, COVID Response Coordinator

Earth Day is April 22, 2021 and Cape Cod Academy's Parents Association is organizing a school-wide clean-up event for Earth Day on Saturday, April 24th (rain date: Sunday, April 25th) from 9:00-11:00 a.m. We are looking for families to volunteer to help pick up trash along the main roads surrounding our 46-acre campus. Families will be split into 5-6 groups and asked to pick up trash along specific routes. The Barnstable police will be meeting with us prior to beginning our clean-up and will be providing detail along the busy roads. The PA will be supplying gloves, reflective vests, trash bags, and trash grabbers.

If you can not volunteer on this date but want to help, please sign up to drop off water bottles and snacks for our volunteers. We are also looking for families with trucks and Barnstable dump stickers to collect trash bags and make runs to the local dump.
We will have a prize for the strangest trash found! This event is for the entire family, and we hope you can come and help keep our campus and surrounding areas beautiful! Please note that the town of Osterville is also having clean-up on Sunday, April 25. Our efforts will support them.

LOWER SCHOOL NEWS
Virtual Field Trip to the Boston Museum of Science

CCA's fifth-grade scientists enjoyed a virtual field trip to the Boston Museum of Science this week. They examined how the sky looks different throughout the year in the museum's program, “Our Changing Sky”. They used the stellarium.org to turn their laptops into a planetarium. Try it at home!
Our fourth-grade students also enjoyed a virtual visit with the Museum of Science. Using their laptops, they logged onto a Zoom meeting to interact with museum presenters through the chat feature. They learned about animal adaptations. Many thanks to Ms. Mac for organizing this virtual event.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
Middle School Students Enjoy Self-Directed Learning

This year, middle school students have the opportunity to participate in Educational Exploration, or E2, a new program designed to provide them an opportunity to explore a topic, concept, or issue that falls outside the boundaries of typical middle school courses. The purpose of the program is to offer students an opportunity to dive into self-directed learning and explore a topic, develop a new skill, or answer meaningful questions.

Three of our eighth-grade students, Kaleigh Howe, Isabella Scioletti, and Jenna Marsh, have selected baking as their topic to explore. Under the direction of Carol Williams, a former baking instructor, caterer, and currently our welcoming receptionist, the girls are learning basic baking methods that include the building blocks of baking and the three main baking / mixing methods. In the coming weeks, the girls will make layer cakes and learn basic cake decorating.

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3-7

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3 - 7. The PA has some amazing things planned each day of that week for our teachers. Please know that everything that will be given to our teachers will be from the entire community.

It has been an extraordinary year. The teachers have done so much for all of our children, so this is a perfect opportunity to give back and show them how much we appreciate them. There will be treats in their mailboxes twice a day. Lunch will be brought in for them on the Wednesday of that week. We are also raffling off a dinner.

We are also asking if you or your child/ren would write a thank you note to your child’s teacher, which we will place in each of their mailboxes during that week. There will be “drop-off boxes” located in Chope Commons and Davis Commons beginning on April 30. If students forget to write their letters at home, there will be extra thank you notes near the boxes.
To end that week, there will be an ice cream truck for the teachers and the entire school on May 7. This is a very special day, because it is also the seniors’ last day on campus before they begin their community service projects.

Cash donations of any amount would be greatly appreciated to cover the costs of that week. If you would like to contribute any amount, you can use Venmo, or drop off your donation at the Reception Desk. Please write “Teacher Appreciation Week” on the envelope or in the Venmo memo. Thank you so very much in advance for your support.
