Detroit Artists Market

All Media Exhibition
Forty-six artists celebrate Detroit culture and heritage through works in mixed media, colorful painting, and sculpture. This exhibition was juried by Dr. Hubert Massey, whose body of work is like a tapestry of social rhythm and expanding color. Dr. Hubert Massey is an award-winning Kresge Fine Arts Fellow whose distinctive fresco murals grace the halls of such visible Michigan destinations as the Flint Institute of the Arts, Detroit Athletic Club, and his alma mater, Grand Valley State University, where he earned an honorary doctorate of fine arts in 2012.

Growth in an Hourglass
M Contemporary Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Grant Czuj. In Growth in an Hourglass, the artist utilizes the time-keeping device to represent space and time, two critical elements during his incarceration. Formally represented as two triangles, in this series the hourglass appears in an abstracted form. Not only is it an iconic image in the culture of incarceration (a popular tattoo image for example) but it is also a fragile and elementary image and device to represent linear time existing in a physical space.

Labyrinths
The Elaine L. Jacob Gallery and University Art Collection, Wayne State University are pleased to present Labyrinths, a solo exhibition by Iranian American artist Shiva Ahmadi. Working across a variety of media that includes painting, digital animation, and sculpture, Ahmadi addresses the machinations of despotic regimes, the horrors of war, and their effects on innocent lives-using beauty to seduce the viewer into her exquisitely crafted scenes. The vibrant fantasy realms in Ahmadi's works are, upon closer inspection, macabre theaters of conflict. The artist appropriates and subverts imagery derived from Persian and Indian miniature paintings, which traditionally depict courtly scenes, mythological epics, and the heroic feats of rulers.

Subversive Beauty
Curator Anita Bates selected the two artists for this exhibition based on their shared joy of creating, and the common thread of nature as the embodiment of their work. Genevieve Klick uses drawing, colored pencil, watercolor and encaustic to create collages that draw out the beauty from the common and everyday experiences of human-kind. Lindy Shrewbridge (MARSHEW) primarily works with oils, as well as acrylic, ink and spray paint to create her energetic works. Lindy uses the languages of color and dynamic movement to enthrall the viewer.

Real Estate
Real Estate features artist Thierry Job, whose interest in architecture informs the art in this exhibition. Thierry Job is not an architect; he is a spectator of architecture. He is interested in the occupation of space through architecture, whether it be as shelter, as a monument to faith or power, or as simply functional. Architecture as symbol is of particular interest to Job; places like Versailles, the World Trade Center, the Taj Mahal express power and history in their monumentality. The progressive structures of Le Corbusier, the genius Buckminster Fuller, Frank Gerry, Rem Koolhass, Renzo Piano, Rudy Ricciotti, Zaha Hadid became signatures of the 20th and 21st centuries.
