Greetings!
One of the coolest initiatives I’ve seen in our industry recently, pandemic or not, is the AATCC’s Time Capsule Contest. In 1964, the association created a time capsule that represented the American textile industry. This year, at the AATCC’s 100-year celebration in November, the contents will be revealed – and afterwards, the group will add a new set of 10 to 12 textile products to a new one. And you have a chance to choose what goes into this 21st century memory box.
The most obvious choice, of course, is PPE products that our industry stepped up to produce during this time of crisis. But maybe that’s too easy. Do you have any creative ideas? The AATCC said the new time capsule will represent “the diverse, interesting, resilient and exciting people and products that make up today's textile industry.” What would you like to see revealed to the world 100 years from now? You need to join the association to have a chance to provide input. AATCC members and student chapters are invited to take part – but they must do so by 11:59 p.m. EST on March 1. Click here for more information.
On the pandemic front, COVID this week claimed a couple more textile industry events – SEAMS’ Spring Networking Conference in May and the Southern Textile Association’s Annual Meeting in June. Both were set to take place on the South Carolina coast, so needless to say, I’m bummed that the days of beach bumming must wait. But let’s keep our fingers crossed that we’ll have our day in the sun – together – this year.

Contempora Fabrics: TS Designs' latest stop on supply chain tour
|
Part 4 of TS Designs’ supply chain journey occurred this week, when company founder and President Eric Henry stopped at circular knitting partner Contempora Fabrics in Lumberton, N.C.
As part of the his company's 10,000 Pounds of Cotton initiative, launched late last year, Henry is putting to action words that he speaks frequently – that is, having a transparent, traceable and local supply chain. This week’s iteration of TS Designs’ webinar series, “The Harvest: A Gathering of Conversations for the Future of Cotton,” featured Alex Whitley, Contempora Fabrics’ vice president of sales.
Burlington, N.C.-based TS Designs’ monthly Zooms are designed to update interested parties on the project it has undertaken through its brand, Solid State Clothing. The brand aimed to buy 10,000 pounds of cotton – enough to make about 13,000 T-shirts – from a local farmer, with investors receiving an ROI in the form of a T-shirt in the spring.

Parkdale of Gastonia, N.C., created branded masks for its “I Wear, I Care™” program, wherein they designed and donated the face masks emblazoned with those words to citizens of communities where its operations are located. This year, Parkdale gave out more than 20,000 face masks. Parkdale, America Knits (cut and sew) in Swainsboro, Ga., and U.S. Bag (packaging, part of Parkdale’s U.S. Cotton Division) in Cleveland, Ohio, were all part of the product’s creation. Each mask is packaged with a photo of a Parkdale employee and caption telling their story and commitment to helping the U.S. textile industry address the critical shortages of PPE.
