COVID WORSHIP UPDATE FOR OCTOBER 10, 2021

All Christ Church Sunday services will be open for in-person worship this week. There will be services at 8:00 am (BCP 1928), 9:15 am (Rite II), 10:30 am (Child-Centered) and 11:15 am (Rite I) in historic Christ Church.

We're planning to add 5:30 pm (Rite II) worship at St. Ignatius, on Saturday, October 30.

All those attending worship services must wear masks (whether you are vaccinated, or not) and maintain six feet of distance between family groups or pods. Reservations are not required at this time.

Rector's Ramblings
…If Donna Purdy picked a peck of pickled peppers, where are the pickled peppers that Donna Purdy picked? With apologies to John Harris’ Peter Piper’s Practical Principles of Plain and Perfect Pronunciation, I’ve been thinking about this childhood tongue twister in a new way. Because I can tell you; that peck is in the refrigerator in a series of ball jars. Boy, are they tasty, too.

We have had hit or miss success with vegetable gardening here in southeast. We don’t have a lot of sunlight in our yard to work with, and irrigation has been a problem at times. Mainly it’s been the heat and learning what we can get to grow and when. Sometimes there are pleasant surprises, like the cherry tomato plant that produced regularly for two seasons, including random tomatoes out of season during a mild winter. This year it’s been the banana pepper plant that survived the summer without anyone to water it, while we were traveling.
Worship
Join Us Online at 9:15 am for Worship
Every Sunday, we will continue to offer online worship from Christ Church at 9:15 am, which you can watch on the Christ Church website at https://ccfssi.org, the Christ Church Facebook page HERE and the Christ Church YouTube page HERE.
All Saints Sunday
All Saints Day will be celebrated on Sunday, November 7, 2021 this year. This is a time of reflection and celebration, as we remember those who have died. We will be collecting their names for the All Saints Book of Remembrance.

If you would like to have the name of someone who has died since last year's All Saints Day services, or the name of a loved one who died prior to last year, read during the November 6&7 services, please add the name to the Remembrance Book that will be available at each worship service, or email us at office@ccfssi.org with the name of the person you wish to honor. Please have the names to us by Friday, October 31, 2021.
Blessing of the Animals 2021
There was a good bit of cheerful barking, a few tentative meows, and a whole lot of tail wagging going on during this past Sunday’s Blessing of the Animals Drive-Through. Along with their human companions, we had 102 dogs, 3 cats, 1 spider and a whole hive of bees visit Christ Church for their blessings and treats. Many thanks to all who helped at both the morning and afternoon drive-through events and to all who brought their beloved animal friends in for blessings. You can see more photos of the adorable participants HERE.

Mission and Outreach
NEEDED! Books for Children and Youth Needed
We have been hoping to collect reading material that can be distributed through to schools and youth programs that the Backpack Buddies serve. Unfortunately, we haven't collected a single book yet!

If you have any gently used children’s and/or young adult books (ages 0 to 17) you’d like to donate, please bring them to the Christ Church Parish House and drop them off on the front porch. If you know families with children's books they no longer need, please let them know about our efforts. These books mean so much to the children who receive them!
Backpack Buddies Teams: Small but Mighty!
COVID safety precautions may have restricted the size of our Backpack Buddies packing teams, but where two or more are gathered in Jesus’ name, to do the work he instructed, (“...feed my sheep”), great is the work that gets accomplished! Our multiple small teams packed over 800 bags of nutritious weekend food bags for our Glynn County buddies last week and they’ll do it again on the next packing day! They’re always looking for new folks to help with this work, so if you’re interested in joining the gang, the bag packers, set-up teams and pick-up and delivery crews will be delighted to welcome you to their ranks. Just contact Susan Shipman at susanshipman920@gmail.com and she’ll help you find the spot that suits you best.

You can also help with this ministry, by “adopting” a Backpack Buddy.
A sponsorship for a child is $100, which will supply the youngster with weekend food bags for the entire school year. You may donate online HERE, (choose Backpack Program from the drop-down menu), or by check (just mail it to Christ Church, at 6329 Frederica Road St. Simons Island, GA 31522; memo line, Backpack Buddies).
Christ Church Comforters October Meeting
The Christ Church Comforters will be meeting on Wednesday, October 20 at 10:00 am in the Parish House. They plan to sort through all of the shawls and lap blankets to see what is available to give out this fall and winter. If members have any completed shawls and lap blankets (or hats), please bring them to the meeting. Those who cannot attend the meeting, but have items to donate, can arrange a time for pick-up with Gay Barron by emailing her at gaylor61@gmail.com. Anyone interested in joining this hands-on ministry is welcome to come to the meeting on October 20 and get to know more about what the Comforters do!
Help Fill the St. Athanasius Food Pantry
Our friends at the St. Athanasius Food Pantry have asked us to pass along one urgent request they have for food - RICE

With cooler weather coming on, the need to make warm, filling foods goes up and rice is a great place to start for so many meals. If you could pick up an extra 1 pound bag of rice or two the next time you’re at the grocery store, and drop them off on the Christ Church Parish House front porch, in the boxes there, we would be grateful.
Stay Informed
Welcome Judy Howard!
We are happy to welcome Judy Howard to Christ Church as our new Financial Administrator. Judy is a lifelong resident of St. Simons and graduate of Glynn Academy. During her career in banking and accounting, Judy has enjoyed various positions locally, most recently as the Club Accountant for Huizenga Holdings at Frederica Golf Club. Judy enjoys spending time with her Mother, Janette, and stays busy taking care of their one year old puppy Dexter.
Netting the Wesley Oak
You may see some netting under part of the "Wesley Oak" tree at Christ Church. The net is part of an acorn harvesting project in partnership with American Heritage Trees (AHT). AHT, a nonprofit conservation and education organization, propagates trees from historic locations in the United States. Some of their historic trees have descended from Mount Vernon, Warm Springs, Sewanee, and more. You can buy a descendant sycamore tree from among those that George Washington laid out on his Virginia estate, a descendant sugar maple from the birthplace of Amelia Earhart, or a descendant Southern Magnolia from Hellen Keller's home.

Harvested acorns will be sent to the AHT farm in Tennessee and if they grow, we will be given saplings in return. They will tell the story of John and Charles Welsey at Frederica and make the descendant trees available to anyone who wants one. The tree now referred to as the Wesley Oak is one of the oldest on the property, but it is not in good health. One benefit of the road project is an ability to care for that tree by removing asphalt, and possibly shoring it up. While most of the living limbs hang over Frederica Road, we are collecting acorns from part of the tree that hangs over the historic wall. AHT was recently featured in a PBS gardening show. You can hear a bit more around 11:20 in the video here: https://volunteergardener.org/episode-3009/
Frederica Road Project
The Frederica Road realignment project has been halted until a hearing takes place later this month to address some complaints brought to the attentoion of the Glynn County Superior Court. Please be assured that to the best of our knowledge Christ Church has always complied with the letter of the law and followed its spirit in this project. Your Vestry is monitoring the situation and will keep you updated when we have more news to share. You should have received an email from Christ Church with a list of frequently asked questions to help clarify the situation. If not, you can read the FAQs HERE. If you have any other questions, please contact Fr. Tom at 912-638-8683.
