Spring Break - NO SCHOOL
Dear Lancer Families,

Our AVID/TOPS students have been hard at work. The freshman students reflected on Semester 1 grades and learned about growth mindset and how different types of failures can help students learn. Our sophomore students completed career and college research and made pennants that will be used to make an art installation in our new College and Career Center in Student Services. Juniors have focused on preparing for the ACT test by doing practices sets, collaborating to analyze questions and passages and by bringing in content specialists to give them tips on each section of the test. March 3rd is the ACT test and we wish our juniors good luck!

With the ACT around the corner, we have seen an increase in students attending college visits. Check out the list of College and Career Visitors

Our Academic and Career Planning (ACP) work this month has been a focus on reviewing transcripts after semester grades and making sure that all students are on track to meet MMSD graduation requirements. This activity happened within Math classes and was supported by our college and career readiness team. Upcoming ACP includes our 10th and 12th grade interviews. Please check out this flyer . We are looking for all sorts of volunteers for these events, please check out this form and consider signing up to help.

Chicago International Auto Show
On February 12 almost 100 students from Memorial, West, East and La Follette joined together and made the annual trip to the Chicago Auto Show. Students had the opportunity to explore hundreds of cars from all of the major car manufacturers around the world. While experiencing the nation's largest auto show, students were able to explore how the design, engineering, automotive and manufacturing worlds combine to show off the latest technology in new cars. Students were able to interact with hundreds of displays, demonstrations and virtual reality experiences with their day long trip to the Chicago Auto Show.

Students who were 18 were allowed to participate in Jeep, Ram and Toyota ride and drive demonstrations as well as several computer controlled simulated road races. Students under 18 had to have an adult present to participate. Our 18 year old students could be the adult for their underage friends. Teachers from each of the schools and adult chaperones were also available to sign for students to participate in all of the activities. If you are interested in making the trip next year, students in all automotive classes will be able to participate in 2021.

Volunteer Staff Thank You
Dear La Follette Music Students, Parents, Families, and Friends,

We just want to take this opportunity to extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to all of you who helped make our district-wide Solo/Ensemble Music Festival, held on Saturday, February 22, a tremendous success. We have received many compliments regarding the event; most notably comments regarding how friendly, courteous, knowledgeable and helpful our volunteer staff was!

First off, we want to thank all the people who donated a food or beverage item for the adjudicators/directors luncheon. Thanks to your kindness and generosity, we had enough food items to also send our volunteers through the “taco bar / salad bar” buffet line whenever they were able to get a break away from their duties.

Secondly, we want to express our appreciation for all the students, parents, families, and staff members who took time out of already busy schedules to help with setting up, running, and finally, cleaning up after the contest itself. Whether you were a door monitor outside a site, a room chairperson working with a judge in a given performance venue, a runner picking up critique forms for tabulation and posting, a volunteer helping with food service, or a worker in the concessions area; you all played a key role in making the festival run efficiently and effectively.

Finally, we want to acknowledge any of our students or parents who arranged to be in attendance on Solo/Ensemble Saturday without having a specific job, duty, or assignment. Whenever we play host to this event, we always try to have some volunteers who do not have a specific task to perform. These "utility players" act as an important back-up for any of our other volunteer positions. Without a set job or role, it can make for an extremely tedious and long day; and we greatly appreciate your patience and self-sacrifice.

The team effort on display was a very heartwarming (and humbling) example of the La Follette school community coming together and performing at its very best! Thank you all, once again, for your combined efforts in helping to make the festival a great success. It was a pleasure working with each and every one of you! And, of course, thank you for your continued interest in and support of music education in the Madison Metropolitan School District and throughout the La Follette High School Attendance Area!!

Sincerely,

Kevin Blakeslee, Levi Olson, Mark Cyra,

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - Student of the Year Campaign
Hello Lancers! We are thrilled to announce we have a team of La Follette staff and students, led by Junior Mina Linsenmayer, working with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) through their Student of the Year campaign. This 7-week initiative, running from January 18th to March 6th, is an exciting opportunity to raise funds in a friendly competition with other teams from around the Madison area to help fund groundbreaking blood cancer research and support patients and their families. Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with a type of blood cancer, and more than ⅓ of patients don’t survive five years after diagnosis. Together, our La Follette community can help change that. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the single largest donor to blood cancer research in the United States, having funded 41 of 47 new FDA approved treatments since 2017. They even fund research at our very own University of Wisconsin, Madison!

Please consider making a donation at the link below:

Thanks so much,
Mina Linsenmayer
